Fitness Roadtest: Smile Fitness

Ashleigh Went

Adele Haussmann is not your average personal trainer, and her business, Smile Fitness, is certainly not average either.

Greeting me with a big smile and positive energy, Adele gave me a tour of her facility in Conder, which is part beauty salon and part personal training studio.

The personal training studio is small but well set-up and packed with equipment. There’s a treadmill, a home gym set up with pin loaded cable weights, stacks of free weights as well as floor space for exercises and stretching. It opens up onto the street, but a screen gives the space plenty of privacy.

Adele begins my warm up on the treadmill with a fast-paced walk and some hand weights. One of the first cues she gives me is to roll my shoulders back and down, pushing my chest forward. This is repeated throughout the session, which I really appreciate – like many of us, I spend the majority of my days at a desk so the temptation to hunch over my shoulders – particularly as I get fatigued – is strong. I also check my posture a lot more after the session.

Adele adds some shoulder presses and bicep curls to the walk, to warm up my muscles and check my movement patterns.

Next, we move onto the floor where Adele gets me to complete a series of strength exercises like plank holds and a few that I’d never done before. There’s a big focus on core strength and after holding each position for about a minute at a time, I begin to shake and feel fatigued.

However, Adele is not the kind of trainer who will allow less than perfect reps. Her clients talk about how they appreciate her focus on technique and I certainly see what they mean. Adele isn’t afraid to coach closely – pressing my stomach to make sure my abs are working, pointing to the part of my back that should be engaged. This is super helpful if you’re new to this kind of movement or as you get tired over the course of the session.

I like how Adele works with time rather than reps. This has always been my preference anyway, but it fits with her focus on technique as well. “I’d rather you do three good reps than 30 less-than-perfect ones” she says.

Next, we run through some seated rows before Adele explaining that they will be part of a Tabata session – running on the treadmill for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of rows, repeated over and over. After showing me how to safely get on and off a moving treadmill, we launch into it, with Adele closely watching my every movement and providing ample cues along the way.

By the time we’ve finished I’m breathless and sweaty – I certainly feel as though I was pushed for the duration of the session, which is exactly what you want from a personal trainer.

Next, we move on to some stretches. I like that Adele dedicated time to stretching – not only because I struggle with flexibility but also because it’s a nice way to ease out of a session – as was the blissful guided relaxation at the end.

Having experienced a one-on-one personal training session with Adele, there are a number of things I can say I really like about Smile Fitness.

Firstly, you get the sense Adele really cares about each and every one of her clients. Not just during their workout, but about their happiness and wellbeing and personal goals.

It’s also more than fitness – Smile Fitness’ three pillars of fitness, beauty and fashion work to help clients to look and feel their best. There are services to not only help you meet your fitness and/or weight-loss goals but also to help you dress in the best way for your body and feel amazing – not to mention massage, nails, skincare and more.

I like the emphasis that Adele places on technique. Perhaps this is due to her background in dance – she spent many years of her life as a professional dancer and led her own dance school. She’s also successfully competed in bodybuilding and has qualifications in Personal Training, Pilates Matwork, as well as jazz, tap and ballet, so it’s safe to say that she has a solid understanding of how the body works.

I also attended one of Adele’s boot camps at Alfred Deakin High and I really enjoyed the supportive and welcoming vibes I received from the other ladies. It’s very clear that Adele has developed a close community of clients.

If you’d like to experience Smile Fitness for yourself, Adele has two packages on offer exclusively for HerCanberra readers.

The first includes a Fitness and Health assessment, 60 minute PT session with Adele and 60-minute full body massage for just $150.

Option two includes all of the above plus five Bootcamp sessions – which I also attended and really enjoyed.

You’ve got from now until Christmas to take up this offer.
