Get a Base Body, Babe

Ashleigh Went

I’ve been following (read: stalking) the Base Body Babes (AKA Felicia Oreb and Diana Johnson) for a long time.

It’s not just their stunning Instagram feed (and envy-inducing abs), but their philosophy that has me hooked. They’re all about fitting a healthy lifestyle into your life; about building a strong body and positive habits; and about having a balanced approach that incorporates rest.

They do all this, while wearing the most lust-worthy activewear and have just been nominated for Cosmopolitan Australia’s Women of the Year 2017.

Best of all? Felicia and her husband Sebastian Oreb are coming to Canberra this weekend for a Base Body Babes Masterclass this Saturday at the Canberra Centre.

We caught up with Felicia to find out how she’s created that healthy, fit body and what we can expect from this weekend’s Masterclass.

When and how did your love of fitness first begin?

I was always active growing up. When I met my husband in my late teens, we began weight training together in the gym. He taught me how to lift weights and I instantly loved this method of training and the way it transformed my body. However, my love of health, fitness and helping others didn’t truly begin until after I gave birth to my daughter. It was at this point that I took my training and nutrition to the next level and truly put my health and fitness first. I was able to achieve the best results I had ever achieved in my life post pregnancy by strength training and eating well. I really wanted to share my knowledge with other women and help them, so I studied to become a personal trainer and from there our business was born.

What is a “Base Body”?

A Base Body is one that is easy to maintain every day. It is made through a balanced lifestyle, using simple weight training methods and good nutrition. It is always our aim for ourselves and our babes to be as happy, healthy, fit, strong and confident as possible, and most importantly to maintain it for life.

What are your go-to exercises in the gym?

We favour our lower body when we train with weights and all of our programs are based around lower body dominant movements like squats, deadlifts and all of their variations. This is because there is so much muscle to work with. The larger the muscle groups, the more challenging the exercise, the higher the calorie burn, all in all, the more bang for your buck the exercise. With the right programming and technique, training this way can give you a beautifully proportioned, toned, lean and strong physique.

What do you think of the myth that “lifting weights makes women bulky”? What would you say to women who are worried about this?

It is actually still the most commonly asked question when it comes to women lifting weights, and actually it isn’t a total myth. One of the main goals of lifting weights is to build muscle. As women, hormonally, we lack certain hormones that men possess more of which allow men to build muscle at a much faster rate, but it doesn’t actually mean that women can’t build muscle. We can, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s important to understand how to correctly develop that muscle to achieve your desired feminine physique.

As fitness professionals who’ve worked extensively with women with varying goals, we have a very good understanding of what ‘most’ women want. The majority of our clients want to build a booty, have lean, toned limbs and a flat tummy, which is achieved with weight training. However, finding the correct balance can be difficult if you do not understand training and nutrition. Achieving these results comes down to correct programming and technique, understanding human movement and of course good nutrition. So if you are unsure of how to train correctly to create your desired feminine proportions, invest in a professional to help you achieve your goals.

What can people expect from your Mastercallss at the Canberra Centre? What knowledge or tools will they walk away with?

Sebastian and I will be sharing the methods we use to create healthy, fit and strong bodies. If your goal is to look good, feel good, be free from injury and live longer, come along and learn the techniques we use to get amazing results for ourselves and how to perform squats, deadlifts and upper body movements correctly, the difference between training men and women, as well as sharing our top lifestyle and training tips. Plus all attendees will receive a 4 week training program to follow on their own!

What are your favourite ways to rest, recover and relax?

I am very simple when it comes to rest and recovery. Jumping on the couch in my pj’s with my family is my ultimate downtime and my favourite part of the day. I ensure I have a minimum of 8 hours sleep per night and that collectively is about as much rest time as I have in a day.

What does your average day on a plate look like?

We believe in eating a well balanced diet filled with healthy and nutritious whole foods and we try to eat as organically as possible everyday of our lives. I personally don’t eat gluten or refined sugar and keep dairy to a minimum because my tummy generally feels better eating this way, and I ensure I have a component of protein with every meal.

A typical breakfast for me consists of two to three boiled or scrambled eggs, with two slices of gluten free toast, spread with organic butter, a side of fresh baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil and sauerkraut.

Lunch is always a combination of some kind of protein and fresh veggies. I love organic chicken, fish and red meat.

I eat the same way for lunch and dinner. A typical meal would be grilled chicken, steamed green veggies and baked sweet potato. I often snack throughout the day with either a protein packed smoothie with Bare Blends Whey Protein Isolate or nuts and berries.
