2016 Canberra Sports Awards: Who will you vote for?

Amanda Smith

Canberrans are fiercely proud of their incredibly talented, dedicated and successful homegrown sporting heroes that reside locally and overseas.

Our top local sporting identities and clubs will share in the spotlight at the 2016 Inaugural CBR Sports Awards held in December at the National Arboretum.

The Sports Awards will celebrate the triumphs of our athletes and teams as well as pay tribute to those who work behind the scenes to ensure the success of our local sporting events.

These freshly invigorated Awards will also recognise teams and clubs for their diversity and inclusion practices at a local level, working to strengthen and diversify the community. There are nine award categories on the night as well as the coveted annual ACT Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

A new event to the awards, The Peoples Sporting Champion, will be decided through popular vote by Canberra’s passionate fans and players. This award is aimed at local professional and amateur athletes that achieve greatness on and off the field, go beyond and above to give back to the community and demonstrate dedication to the promotion and development their sport.

This is an incredible award as it’s a chance for the community to participate in the nomination process of who takes out the prestigious title of their Champion.

According to the ABS, the ACT has the highest rate of sporting participation of any capital city in Australia. As a lifelong resident of the Capital, this comes as no surprise. As a small town between Sydney and Melbourne, we sent 30 athletes to the Olympics and Paralympics with medals of all colours coming home but regardless of medals; the overwhelming pride they brought us was more than enough. In recent weeks, the city has been lit up with green to show our support for the Canberra Raiders, a team that is truly carrying the weight of our hopes on their shoulders after a season of incredible ups and heartbreaking downs.

Nominations are open to vote for the 2016 Peoples Sporting Champion until Friday 14 October at
