Five reasons not to leave town this Canberra Day

HerCanberra Team

It’s March event madness again, and Canberrans are diving head first into a bumper 31 days’ worth of events, including one pretty special birthday celebration.

That’s right, on Monday 13 March, Canberra turns a ripe 104. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our city’s big day, than getting together to enjoy a jam-packed weekend full of free events and activities.

In true Canberra style, the big birthday bash will include live music and a line up of fun entertainment the family can enjoy. Set in the picturesque Commonwealth Park, Canberra Day celebrations will be hosted at Stage 88, running from 2pm – 7pm.

Ease into your Monday public holiday and pack a picnic and head to the park. Pick the perfect picnic spot and settle in for an afternoon of top entertainment.

  1. Big entertainment for the little ones

Let your little ones run wild, dance, laugh and sing as Dreamworks’ the Trolls Show take to the stage at 2pm, followed by Shaun the Sheep at 2.35pm. And it isn’t really a birthday party without a jumping castle – which is free to play on! Picnic games will be hosted across the afternoon, and free face painting and ticketed amusement rides will also be available to keep kids entertained.

  1. Top local tunes

String Elephants

This year, Canberra Day celebrations also shine a light on some amazing local young music talent. String Elephants and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are seriously cool, hip bands who are making their mark in the music scene.

String Elephants describe themselves as ‘a few lads’ who have been playing together for three years and writing their own music for a year. To note, they reached #2 on the Triple J Unearthed charts in 2016 and released an EP with Merloc Records. We think they are doing pretty well for just ‘a few Canberra lads’.

  1. Girl power

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are an alternative rock band of five sixteen-year-old girls from a Steiner school in Canberra. The band formed in July 2015 and their tracks have been played on radio stations around the world. The girls take inspiration from the likes of the Strokes, Nirvana, the Runaways, Arctic Monkeys and the Pixies. Their aim is to spice up your life with some 90s style alt rock. Go girls! We can’t wait!

  1. Havana Brown and Hoodoo Gurus

From 4.30pm, we welcome the amazing artist/producer, Havana Brown to the stage.

Havana’s imaginative beats will get your heart pumping and your feet moving before the stage is primed for Canberra Day’s headline act…

…the Hoodoo Gurus! Touted as one of Australia’s greatest, best loved, most enduring rock bands of all time, the Hoodoo Gurus will entertain young and old with well-known, well-loved popular rock songs from 5.50pm – 7pm. We can’t wait to sing along to our favourites – ‘What’s My Scene’, anyone?!

  1. Food glorious food

Topping off this bumper celebration of a birthday, is the food offerings. With lots of local food traders to choose from, Canberrans can work their way through delicious wood-fired pizzas, burgers, marinated BBQ skewers, churros, gelato, crepes, juice, hot beverages and more! It is a party, after all, eating is all part of the fun.

So, if you are in Canberra across the long weekend, and would like to say ‘happy birthday’ to the nation’s capital, bring your family, friends and loved ones to Stage 88 at Commonwealth Park for an afternoon of fun, free live entertainment and performances. We’ll see you there!
