Canberra says YES!

HerCanberra Team

The results are in and as we had hoped, Canberra was awesome in supporting the rights of our LGBTIQ population.

Almost three in every four Canberrans voted YES in the same-sex marriage postal survey.

“There are many reasons to be proud of our city, but today I feel particularly proud of how Canberrans have voted for marriage equality,” said Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

Chief Minister Barr noted that the ACT had the highest yes vote of any jurisdiction, demonstrating how inclusive Canberrans are.

“The national vote was a resounding yes, but the ACT stood out at 74%. We had the highest voter turnout of any jurisdiction at 82.4%, which demonstrates how much Canberrans care about our future. Marriage equality is about the values we hold dear. All Australians should be treated equally under the law — and that includes being able to marry the person they love.”

But Chief Minister Barr echoed the sentiment held by many when he noted that while the outcome has been positive, the process by which it was achieved was difficult and downright disheartening for so many Canberrans.

“The same-sex marriage postal survey…should never be repeated – LGBTIQ people in this country should not be singled out in this way and have to endure public vitriol. Now it’s time to get on with it.”

“Together we have achieved a fairer and more inclusive country for all of us. I look forward to celebrating this occasion with the thousands of Canberrans that voted for change.”
