Need a push to get on your bike this week?

Canberra’s first Walk and Ride Week has commenced, with a festival of events and activities being coordinated by the ACT Government’s Active Travel Office.

“During the week, Canberrans are being encouraged to walk, ride and catch public transport as often as possible for any journey,” says Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris.

Throughout the week there will also be a range of other events to help celebrate Canberra Walk and Ride week. Here are a few highlights.

WHAT’S ON?

You might try a guided mountain bike commute to work, attend a public forum with visiting Dutch Cycle Ambassador Mark Wagenbuur, take part in guided walks at Jerrabomberra Wetlands or watch a film screening documenting the 1928 Tour de France.

WANT A LITTLE BIT MORE?

If you’re keen to make a difference to the environment why not try out the ACTSmart Carbon Challenge, which provides an opportunity for commuters to choose other modes of transport over taking their car.

GET APPY

Minister Fitzharris also announced an exciting new smartphone app which is available in time for Canberra Walk and Ride week.

“The free app, ACTiveLog, can be downloaded from the app store and is designed to use GPS functionality to track your walking and cycling activities,” explains Minister Fitzharris.

WHY IS THE APP IMPORTANT?

“The data collected will provide a picture of where, how and when Canberrans walk and cycle. The more we understand how Canberrans move about our city on foot and by bike, the more info for decision-making processes will be for future infrastructure and facility investments.

“Whether commuting to school, work, to a meeting, an appointment or a social outing, I encourage anyone interested in joining in Canberra’s Walk and Ride week to activate the app and be part of the week,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.

Canberra Walk and Ride Week runs from 17 March – 24 March 2017. More details including a full program of events for Canberra Walk and Ride can be found here.
