Drawing North: Coming home

Calum Stenning

What brings a band that just performed a sold out show at the Sundance Film Festival to Canberra? They’re coming home.

If there’s something Canberra loves, it’s singing the praises of hometown heroes. Canberra pride runs deep. Drawing North are, in essence, a Canberra band. The members have worked in Canberran businesses, and as band, they honed their sound in Canberran venues.

“We’ve been playing together since 2010,” says band member Drew Southwell. “We started by jamming, writing and just playing local gigs. Eventually, we settled on a style we liked and pursued it more seriously.”

So seriously, in fact, they found themselves performing at Sundance, one of the most prestigious film festivals the world has to offer.

“It was unreal,” says Drew. “We did a handful of brand sponsored events and parties such as Coca-Cola and played some bigger shows to hundreds of different people.”

As one can imagine, performing on the world stage is an ideal way to develop as musicians, and as a band. But they’ve also had the opportunity to develop the business side of the band too.

“Our style has really developed and we’ve learned a lot about the music industry,” explains Drew.

“We’ve learned how to produce and collaborate with different artists as well as how the business side works. It’s a large and crazy beast but it can be really fun.”

But the band isn’t back to lollygag around the capital. They’re here for a hometown album launch, their second, which swiftly followed their first, released in September last year.

“[The process] was incredibly fast,” says Drew. “We had just released our debut album through Universal and wanted to move on really quickly. We wrote about 12 songs and chose the best five, which we then recorded at a beautiful studio in Avoca Beach.”

Drew is encouraged by the recent success of other Australian acts, such as Flume who recently scooped a Grammy for Best Dance Album.

“We’ve found that Aussies are always very welcomed over there and there’s definitely a lot of talent coming out of this country!”
