Five ‘Escapeflix’ to binge watch

Beatrice Smith

Netflix is changing the way we view television, and for some of us, it’s the ideal escape from the everyday.

Here are five shows where escapism isn’t just a state of mind, it’s a necessity.

  1. THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT

When Kimmy Schmidt is rescued from an underground doomsday cult after 15 years, she’s excited to learn that the world is far more colourful (and alive) than she was led to believe. Desperate to soak up the experiences she has missed, she moves to New York City, rents a terrible apartment, befriends a struggling actor and starts working for a socialite…as you do.

  1. STRANGER THINGS

Dominating the internet and earning millions of fans since the release of the first season this year, Stranger Things is part heart thumping thriller, part love sick homage to 80s pop culture. Set in small-town Indiana, the show follows twelve-year-old tight-knit pals Mike, Lucas and Dustin as they search for their missing friend Will. But when they find seemingly lost girl Eleven instead, it becomes clear that the nearby government science facility might have something to do with Will’s disappearance.

  1. MISFITS

What happens when five young offenders from South London are hit by lightening while serving their community service sentences? Superpowers, that’s what. While some are already desperate to escape their criminal past, they’re now trying to navigate the powers they hold, with some hilarious and dark consequences.

  1. ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

Are you a Piper or an Alex? OITNB follows one-time drug mule Piper, as she ends up the last place she thought she’d visit – Federal Prison. This ground-breaking series from Jenji Kohen (Weeds) will make you wonder how you’d act in prison, which alliances you’d form and whether you’d be the same after your release.

  1. DAREDEVIL

Flipping the idea of disability on its head is just the start of Daredevil’s twists and turns. The show follows Hells Kitchen lawyer by day, vigilante by night Matt Murdock as he uses his ‘super senses’ to guide him through New York’s dark streets.

Seeing a crooked justice system let bad guys walk from court isn’t too hard when you know you can hunt them down later that night, but Matt’s moral compass becomes questionable as he struggles to escape his past and maintain his secret identity.
