Giveaway: The Dressmaker Premiere Screening

Beatrice Smith

Kate Winslet is probably one the foremost stars of modern dramatic cinema.

She’s best known for Titanic, although I loved her voice work in Flushed Away and in dramatic roles in films like The Reader, Revolutionary Road (reunited with Leo!) and, most recently, Divergent.

But right now, I can’t stop watching her Australian accent.

When I first saw the trailer for The Dressmaker, I was at the cinema with my film student sister. After it finished, we looked at each other with wide eyes, a silent ‘YES’ being communicated between us. The film revolves around a haute couture seamstress returning home to a small Australian country town after working in Europe.

It’s hard to pick what I like most in the trailer.

Kate’s accent is fabulous, very country New South Wales, and as far as I can see she pulls it off far better than other Brits have (Daniel Radcliffe in The December Boys, anyone?).

The outfits are obviously fabulous – as they should be in a movie with this name. A quick Google reveals that Costume Designer Marion Boyce’s last role was on Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, so it’s an understatement to say I’m excited.

The film has been adapted from the novel of the same name by Rosalie Ham. It was published in 2000 and was a best seller, so it’ll be interesting to see what lovers of the book think of the adaptation.

Besides all this though, it’s an Australian film adapted by Australian women (Director Jocelyn Moorhouse and Producer Sue Maslin) from an Australian book by an Australian woman. Films like these don’t come around too often and one must greet them in style.

Limelight Cinemas have clearly decided that The Dressmaker is indeed a special occasion; they’ve arranged a glamorous premiere event for Thursday 22 October – a whole week before the film is released to other cinemas!

Tickets are just $19 and include a Choctop and complimentary goodie bag – perfect for an evening out with the girls or date night. The Dressmaker might seem like a chick flick (did we mention there’s a love interest in the shape of Liam Hemsworth?) but with this much Australian talent on one screen, I can’t think of anyone turning down the opportunity.
