Happy Birthday Canberra!

Amanda Whitley

It’s no secret that we’re massive Canberra fans—and that’s one of the reasons why March is our favourite month. Not only is there something on every single day, but it’s also a chance to celebrate all things Canberra, as she celebrates her birthday!

That’s right, the old girl turns 103 on Monday 14 March, and there’s one heck of a party planned! Complementing the magic of Enlighten, it’s One Wonderful Weekend packed full of special events, kicking off with the Canberra Balloon Spectacular on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s Symphony in The Park and Canberra Day celebrations to round things out on Monday.

Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park is the place to be on Monday afternoon for a big Canberra birthday party bursting at the seams with live music and an eclectic mix of entertainment to entertain young and old.

Headlined by local house music duo—and one of the country’s hottest house music acts—The Aston Shuffle, the program kicks off at 2pm with two live performances from Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Then it’s on to the perfect Canberra Day soundtrack with homegrown music from DJ Felixx, The Advocates and the Brass Knuckle Brass Band.

The Ashton Shuffle’s chilled tunes will round out the day—and one big long weekend. Home in Canberra for just a few days between their hectic touring schedule and weekly radio show Friday Night Shuffle on Triple J, Vance and Mikah will add some birthday cheer as they take to the stage at 6pm.

But that’s not all—it just wouldn’t be a birthday party without food markets, free activities such as the Stick Up Wall and Jump ‘n’ Slide, and amusement park rides for all ages.

Younger partygoers will be kept entertained by The Gecko Gang—there’ll be Giant Party Games including Connect Four, Get Knotted, Blocks Building and Quoits as well as Gecko-worker led games including Tug of War, Egg and Spoon Races, Giant Ski and Hopper Races.

There’s also some great ‘quiet time’ craft activities on offer, where the young (and young at heart) can decorate their own foam hot air balloon or Telstra Tower stencil, or create a cockatoo mask.

So get along and join the party! Plan your day with the detailed program at
