Her Say: Issue of the Week

Beatrice Smith and Hayley O'Neill

In this weekly street series we pick a hot topic of the week and ask for your thoughts…

Former Olympian Dawn Fraser’s comments about tennis enfant terrible Nick Kyrgios’ heritage (in regards to his behaviour at Wimbeldon in the past week) have sparked debate across Australia in regards to whether we truly believe we are an inclusive nation, particularly in a country that celebrates its multiculturalism. As Nick Kyrgios is a Canberran (spending his early years training at the O’Connor tennis courts) we headed to the streets to ask “What are your thoughts on Dawn Fraser’s comments in terms of Canberra’s multicultural community?”

Romy

“I think [they were] definitely misguided. I think Canberra is a really multicultural city and we welcome everyone from different countries and different cultures. I think you can’t base someone’s behaviour on where they come from.” Romy, Kambah.

Lorraine

“Misguided. I didn’t think it was the right thing to say. I know when I read it I thought ‘I can’t believe she said that’. We have a very multicultural community [in Canberra].” Lorraine, Monash.

Ali Price

“It’s nothing to do with culture or race or sex or anything; it’s to do with the person so I don’t agree with what [Fraser] said. It’s ridiculous.” Ali, Kingston.

Jacqui

“Firstly, I don’t agree with what she said. I don’t think it has anything to do with the game and nothing to do with what Australia stands for. [The comments were] completely irrelevant; it shouldn’t have been said and she probably regrets it.” Jacqui, Turner.

Suzanne

“There’s just no room for that type of thinking anymore. It’s very stuck in the [1950s] and as a nation we’ve progressed a lot further than that.” Suzanne, Nicholls.
