Her Say: Issue of the Week

HerCanberra Team

In this new street series, we pick a hot topic of the week and ask for your thoughts…

This week, we ask “What is your opinion on the Federal Government’s plan to withhold welfare benefits from people who refuse to immunise their children?”

girl1

“I don’t support anti-vaccination myself but I think this is the wrong way to go about it, because it’s targeting a section of society but not the issue as a whole. There’s a significant number of anti-vaxxers who don’t rely on welfare so you’re really only penalising some without really helping the problem.” Steph, 31, NewActon

“I think its actually quite a good thing as it’s a difficult thing to legislate for, to make people vaccinate their kids; but it’s obviously a good thing for people to give vaccinations for kids, so the government should do what it can to keep the population safe from the things it can prevent.” Felicity, 27, Aranda.

“It is tough, because it will probably cause a bit of an outrage amongst those who are anti-vaccinations, but it’s the closest thing to enforcing new legislation. I’m definitely pro-vaccination.” Francis, 29 Macgregor.

“I think that people should be able to have a decision not to vaccinate their kids because we don’t know the consequences. For the government to withhold welfare is very extreme.” (Wished to remain anonymous), 22, Turner

What do you think? We’d like to hear your thoughts too! If you have an opinion, leave a comment below.
