Magazine: Back to Basics, out now!

HerCanberra Team

HerCanberra’s Magazine Issue 8: Back to Basics is here and it is beautiful!

We’re talking nearly 150 pages of local information and inspiration—from effortless fashion and beauty to local food and wine producers embracing time-honoured practices; people eschewing the fast-paced connectedness of 21st century life and travel destinations off the beaten track. Plus you’ll find the print preview of the latest edition of our online wedding publication, UNVEILED.

We asked the HerCanberra team to nominate their favourite feature. Take a peek inside at hercanberra.com.au/magazine and find your nearest stockist here.

“Our Modern Classics food porn recipe feature – our über-talented husband and wife styling-and-photography team of Belinda Neame and Tim Bean have taken culinary gems from the 70s and reinvented them for today’s table. Get in my belly!”

EMMA MACDONALD, ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Basic Instinct-9

“When Javier Steel, our creative director, told me about the Basic Instinct photo shoot, I remember having my doubts about how something shiny and monochromatic could fit in with the “tone” of this edition of Magazine. Then the shots came back and I was literally gobsmacked. While this shoot was conceived months ago, I note how the aesthetic completely picked the autumn/winter trends that are now coming through the major fashions house across Australia.

“It is simply stunning to behold. And fits the brief perfectly. HAUS model Ruby Fisher is magnificent against the concrete of the National Gallery stairwells, the clothes all need to find their way into my wardrobe, and the most exciting part for me as that while this idea is all HerCanberra—and the team that executed it is all local talent—it would not look out of place in any international glossy magazine you care to name.”

“It’s no secret that Some Café has been my absolute favourite from the minute I found it. It is now my family’s ‘regular’ even though it’s a 40-minute drive from home. We take the drive as regularly as we can on weekends and, although we’ve spent considerable amount of time at the cafe, I loved reading more about Oliver and Lucy in Magazine.

“Knowing their journey and why they’ve chosen Collector gave me a sense of connection to the café.  And after reading that they have chickens out the back, we now know why their eggs are so tasty!  Their ethos is uncomplicated and I couldn’t think of a better fit for the ‘Back to Basics’ theme.”

The home truths in Five ways to simplify your life resonate with me as too often I find my headspace cluttered with unnecessary chaos. Reading these gentle reminders is like spring-cleaning for the mind!”

“My favourite stories are those of people getting a tricky roll of the dice in life, but turning it around and getting back on top. The Policeman and the Farmer is not just one of those, but one that makes me feel better about my own career changes.”

“I went camping last weekend and am so keen to do it again soon. The Cabin Fever editorial by Calum is perfect for low-key autumn escapes that aren’t too far from town.”

Runaway Bride—our off-the-rack bridal fashion pictorial. Each and every image in the shoot is powerful and beautiful. The clothes chosen are fun and experimental, something which you wouldn’t always expect in a wedding photoshoot. I also love how Some Café in Collector is the location of the shoot—it’s the great places surrounding Canberra which make our city even better!
