HisCanberra: Movember’s Last Night

HerCanberra Team

Blokes across Canberra (and the world) are nearing the end of their upper lip itch as Movember draws to the finish line.

You can almost hear the wives and girlfriends rejoice at the thought of a clean-shaven face for them to once again bestow their affections upon.

The efforts of our Canberra lads have not been in vain. They’ve donated their faces and time to raise much needed awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and mental health issues.

This year Canberra celebrates 10 years of participating in the fundraising phenomenon and will celebrate with a special send off.

King O’Malley’s Irish Pub – home of Movember Canberra – will be hosting an ‘End of Movember Party’ on Thursday 26 November kicking off at 7pm. There will be prizes to give away and drink specials for anyone donning a Mo.

King O’Malley’s Irish Pub has hosted the end of month party every year. This year the Movember organisation decided not to host the much loved Gala Party but the Managing Director of King O’Malley’s, Peter Barclay AOM, said that Movember would just not be the same without the popular send off event.

“Movember is one of those special events as it brings people together to share their stories about why they have gotten behind the cause,” said Peter Barclay. “So we’ve decided to carry on the tradition of having an end of month party and invite all Mo Bro’s and Sista’s to come down and celebrate with us.

As the host of Movember in Canberra over the last 10 years Peter can remember some great moments and amazing people who have gotten behind the cause.

“I remember one year we had a ‘stache off, with former member of the Legislative Assembly, John Hargreaves, challenging the then WIN News Presenter, Lachlan Kennedy.”

“The challenge was if Lachlan could grow a Mo over the month then Hargreaves would shave off his famous moustache, which had only been removed twice since the early 1970s.”

“In 2011, Canberra actually won Top Fundraiser Awards. One of our local teams ‘TransACT Rocks Movember’ raised $134,000 taking out the Top Team in the World (under 10 people). Head of the ‘TransACT Rocks Movember’ team, Ivan Slavich, raised $65,000 and was the highest earning Mo Bro worldwide.”

“We’ve had a number of local personalities get involved, including Andrew Barr, The Footy Show’s Erin Molan, Richard Luton and Ross Solly.”

“We’ve also had amazing support from your everyday heroes as well. Local lad Ryan Mongon was nearly crowned Canberra’s Man of Movember three years in a row.”

“He really goes all out for Movember and is a familiar face to everyone involved. He just lost in 2012 by coming in second place… but for many people he will always be the ultimate Man of Movember for Canberra.”
