Just Be Revolution: Relishing individuality

Annie Caughey

Close your eyes and imagine a world where we are free to explore our individuality without limits.

A world where our differences are celebrated rather than suppressed. A world where we finally break free from the socially encouraged judgement of one another.

Can you see it? Well, this is the world that Vicky Kidd-Gallichan is dreaming of.

A local designer of over 20 years (Rockstars and Royalty, anyone?), Vicky has experienced firsthand the harsh repercussions of an industry operating under a thinly-defined concept of beauty. She has seen the hurt caused to individuals as they are told they don’t fit the desired mould of what is accepted, and it’s something she wants to change.

“Knowing that there are so many people who don’t feel free to be themselves is heartbreaking,” she explains. “I want everyone to be themselves and not feel they have to conform to the mythical ‘normal’ that is promoted in the fashion industry and in society more broadly.”

That’s why she is part of kick-starting the Just Be Revolution, an interactive and inclusive online platform sharing influential stories, videos and events, all dedicated to inspire people to relish in their own individuality.

Teaming up with 12 other Canberra women, all fed up with their own struggles, they have created an army motivated to pave the way to a better and more open-minded future.

Whether you’re a crusader yourself, wanting to share your own story of overcoming adversity or just someone who just needs a small reminder that you’re not alone, you can contribute to the Just Be Revolution either as a writer or a reader.

Feeling the girl power? Yeah me too. Here’s how to get involved.

Next Thursday 27 April, the Just Be Revolution are hosting their official launch party to spread the message of tolerance far and wide. It will be the first of many events promoting ideals of individuality and acceptance through a showcase of unique local talent, art and entertainment.

“We want people to leave feeling inspired to try something new and with a little more confidence to be themselves,” explains Vicky.

Included in the night will be canapes, a photo booth, prizes and entertainment including an energetic and colourful samba performance from the dancers at Subsdance Canberra. This is in addition to a hilarious ensemble from the winner of Burlesque Idol Australia 2017 and Canberra local burlesque performers Rainbow and Captain Spitfire, both crusaders of diversity.

Hosted in the chic ballroom of QT Canberra, the night is set to be a delicious visual treat, full of fun, excitement and flare. Tickets are currently on sale at Eventbrite but there’s no time for umming and ahhing, because sales close this Sunday!
