Seven things not to miss at Art, Not Apart
Posted on
Exactly a week from today, Art, Not Apart is back to give you your autumn dose of culture.
It’s the infamous annual event that sticks a big metaphorical middle finger to the concept that Canberra is boring and only cultural within our lofty national institutions. Art, Not Apart unites artists from all formats from across Canberra, Australia and the world into a one-day program so compact it will make your head spin.
NewActon, NFSA, and all the bits in between, will come alive with exciting new art, installations and performances this year; to ensure that you don’t miss a thing, we’ve curated a selection from the program that you’d be a fool to miss.
ART ON FILM
Art, Not Apart 2017 brings an expanded film and moving image program curated by Sam Dignand, and a new focus on the National Film and Sound Archive. Film buffs and casual viewers alike will enjoy a screening of Monsieur Mayonnaise – an incredible true story following acclaimed filmmaker Phillipe Mora’s exploration of his father’s life and Nosferatu with live musical accompaniment by Tess Said So.
In the beautiful atmosphere of the heritage-listed NFSA Courtyard, patrons can experience a variety of installations and performances throughout the day. Highlights include interactive installation ‘Art On The Line’ and the aptly named performance, ‘Shake It,’ which will bring contemporary dance and flair bartending to the venue for a cocktail party.
PUMP THE BLOOD
The Artery will be an incredible opportunity to see the wheels of art in motion. Transforming 100 metres of stonewall along Edinburgh Avenue, The Artery will exhibit contemporary street art on recycled ply canvas from both local and visiting artists created especially for the occasion.
Displayed in front of the Shine Dome, there will be an array of pre-prepared works for your contemplation and viewing pleasure, along with a series of live paintings on the day. The Artery will be a wonderful chance to see artists at work, with each creator bringing to life their unique vision before your very eyes.
GROW OUR ARTS
Art, Not Apart is sure to be a feast for the eyes and mind, but don’t go thinking that your ears will miss out. If you’re a lover of poetry and performance, or maybe you just want to be, The Poet Tree is your best chance to hear some thought-provoking and beautiful spoken word.
The Poet Tree will also include a major discussion panel regarding the state of ACT arts funding. As well as celebrating creativity and creative outlets, it’s important to discuss strategies and plans to ensure that this creativity continues to blossom into Canberra’s future.
Among the panellists will be ACT Arts Minister Gordon Ramsay, Molonglo Group Director Jonathan Efkarpidis and Festival Producer and President of MusicACT David Caffery.
MORE THAN INSPIRATION
There is no doubt that all of the contemporary art on offer will have your right brain tingling. It’s also likely that you’ll want to leave Art, Not Apart with more than just inspiration.
If this is the case then it’s a good thing that the Suitcase Rummage is back in force this year. Snaking its way around the Shine Dome will be a selection of over 50 different stalls, each with suitcases packed with handmade arts and crafts, vintage goods and other bric-a-brac.
More than just mementos, the Suitcase Rummage will offer you the chance to purchase something freshly-created or preloved to take home and hang up, hoist up or just proudly display.
EAT THE CULTURE
All this culture is sure to work up an appetite so it’s a good thing that local vendors will be set up to help you refuel.
Asili will be serving up some African treats, alongside New Acton fixtures A. Baker, Bicicletta, Mocan & Green Grout and Parlour who will have stalls set up around the NewActon courtyard. Plenty of delicious food to chose from or, if you can’t decide, indulge in it all.
To accompany your food, four local wineries will also be on site offering tasting options as well as the usual by-the-glass selections, and Capital Brewing will be on hand, keeping you beery and cheery.
FEEL THE FURY AND DO IT ANYWAY
Sound and Fury is Art, Not Apart’s official 18+ performance art afterparty. Though the event is now a fixture, new excitement has been bubbling due to its new location—the NFSA.
With a larger capacity this year the vibe is set to be more electric than ever. Patrons are in for a night of music, dance, theatre, live art and spoken word, which can all be washed down at either of the two bars, stocked with wine and beer from local vendors, as well as cocktails.
It’s a perfect warm up for F-ck Art, Let’s Party – there’s even a bus running between the two events. And speaking of…
F_CK ART, LET’S PARTY
Go all night long in a til-dawn dance party, warehouse style. The cheekily named F-ck Art, Let’s Party is presented by uniVibes and Escape Ferocity, and will feature more than 40 artists as well as immersive installations.
A $25 ticket doesn’t just gain you access to two performance areas stacked with DJ’s, but access to the bus to get you there and back safely.
The event is 18+, and – are you ready? Bring. Your. Own. It’s BYO. Can’t think of a better way to end the day and night extravaganza.
