An X-Factor winner, an inspirational speaker and internationally renowned performer along with one of Australia’s most respected leaders have thrown their support behind the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Christmas Gala to be held at Exhibition Park in Canberra on Friday 4 December.

The Christmas Gala is the showpiece fundraiser for the region’s rescue helicopter service which is experiencing record demand including 509 life-saving missions last year alone.

Snowy Hydro SouthCare patron and former Chief of Defence Force Sir Angus Houston will deliver a special address as part of the event. Sir Angus has a long connection with aero-medical rescue and recently led the Australian search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

X-Factor winner and top-selling performing artist Samantha Jade will headline the entertainment while disability support advocate and internationally renowned opera singer Tim McCallum will perform in Canberra for the first time and speak about his experiences rebuilding his life after a medical trauma.

“It’s an honour to have Sir Angus Houston involved with our service,” said Chris Kimball, Snowy Hydro SouthCare Trust CEO.

“Tim McCallum’s rise through adversity to international musical acclaim is remarkable while Samantha Jade brings genuine star power to this event.”

The Snowy Hydro SouthCare Christmas Gala will highlight the regional nature of the helicopter service through food producers from the Canberra region offering tastings and insights into their operations as well as a local paddock-to-plate dining experience.

The Capital Region Farmers Market pavilion will be transformed into a unique black tie venue with the rescue helicopter on the site.

“This is a gala with a difference, we’re taking a well-known community space and turning it into something Canberra has never seen before.”

“Guests will be able to walk the red carpet and have a photo with the helicopter and hear stories of its valuable work through the launch of two powerful films produced with the generous support of Canberra design agency Coordinate,” Mr Kimball said.

One short film will feature Snowy Hydro SouthCare ‘mission alumni’ Tracey Collins and Mitch Gatenby. Tracey’s son Brodie was transported after being hit by a car on Horse Park Drive in Gungahlin, while Mitch was rescued after he was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident near Batemans Bay.

“These are genuine and powerful stories that bring home the value of the Snowy Hydro SouthCare service and the work of the flight and medical crews,” Mr Kimball said.

The event will also see the launch of a road safety initiative and a television commercial with the theme of ‘See What I See’ featuring the experiences of a Snowy Hydro SouthCare pilot.

Money raised from the Christmas Gala will go towards the operation of the rescue helicopter.
