Steampunk and Victoriana (time) travel to Goulburn

Holly Zapasnik

Come with us now on a journey through time and space…

How would people in the Victorian era have imaged the future to look?

Steampunk combines classic Victorian elegance with future imaginings of the Victorian era. The Steampunk and Victoriana Fair in Goulburn is in its third year, hosted at the Goulburn Historic Waterworks. Last year saw over 600 people in attendance and this year is expected to be even bigger!

This Saturday 15 October, the fair will transform the Goulburn Historic Waterworks into a past/future wonderland.

Celebrity author, activist, and journalist, Tara Moss has a passion for the unique fantasy genre of steampunk. Her steampunk persona ‘The Tight-Laced Time Traveller’ will be attending and judging the fashion contest, where you can expect to see a lot of corsets, cogs, gears and goggles, combined with traditional Victorian dresses.

The event was inspired by the venue itself. Goulburn Historic Waterworks houses two historically significant engines from the 1800’s, one of which will be operating during the fair. Clydesdale horse and carriage rides provide an authentic Victorian feel (and potential background for the perfect photo of you in your steampunk outfit!).

Plenty of events and acts will keep even the steamiest of punks entertained throughout the day including such events as the Dij Dijor Tea Pot Challenge, tea & parasol duels and musical act Penny Farthings.

The National Military Re-enactment Group will present an array of guns, Jeff Thompson from Cybridian will perform his industrial electric rock to add that futuristic edge while you enjoy perusing Barak Zelig’s Steampunk art exhibition. To cap it all off, the Zhagareet Oriental Belly Dance Troupe will perform their transfixing moves (which may be difficult to replicate by their corset-clad crowd).

Holly is a final year public relations student at University of Canberra who will talk your ear off about her dog, Archie (who she will claim is the cutest kelpie in the world). As a Canberran who has lived here her entire life, Holly enjoys quaint little bookstores full of character and making people uncomfortable with her terribly bad puns. When she isn't at home geeking out on her computer, Holly can be found lurking around dog parks patting and playing with the best of them. More about the Author
