Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it.

Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it.

This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that have not. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice.

More than 400 years after The Merchant of Venice was written, the taut line between religious law or secular society, righteousness or compassion, tolerance or hate, is still present in our lives today.

Featuring three-time Helpmann Award winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the uncompromising and defiant Shylock, Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, and directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Belvoir’s Jasper Jones and Medea), this production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.

Happening from 13-21 October at Canberra Theatre Centre, City.

Tickets available online from Read our article on The Merchant of Venice here.

Under Sedation is Canberra verse remixed. This bold and thought-provoking new theatre work honours the national contribution of local poets – both spoken and sung, past and present. The show embraces compositions from one of the most vibrant poetic hubs in the nation.

This work weaves together the old and the new, sung and spoken, published and drafted, applauded and unknown, the earnest and irreverent, transforming performance poetry from slam to stage to explore what may hurt or pacify.

Under Sedation will not mark the first time that poetry has gone to the theatre but will see The Street transform local poetry into a bold, contemporary production to continue and enrich the dialogue that Canberra poets and songwriters have so generously brought to the community.

Showing at The Street Theatre until 14 October. Find more information and tickets at

Palliative Care ACT has been supporting people at end of life and their carers for over 30 years. This support takes the form of volunteers who visit the terminally ill in the hospice, in their home, at a residential aged care facility and even in the Canberra Hospital to assist with a multiplicity of services. It might be to take the patient to a medical appointment, take them on an outing, read to them, make a cuppa, provide a hand or foot massage, write up a life story or give the carer a few hours off.

Palliative Care’s recent fundraising efforts have been directed towards training volunteers to support people in their home. Research shows that over 70 percent of people would like to die at home but only 14 percent do so. It costs around $2000 to train each volunteer.

To help support this amazing work, Palliative Care ACT is holding its annual fundraising dinner at the Canberra Southern Cross Club on Saturday 14 October starting at 6.30pm.

Tickets are $75.00 and are available via Eventbrite.
