A different kind of date night

HerCanberra Team

Is your idea of a romantic date night NETFLIX on the couch with a tub of Ben & Jerry’s?

Perhaps if you are feeling really adventurous maybe even a trip to the movies on cheap Tuesday (you wild thing, you!)?

Well Spring is finally here to force us out of hibernation, so now is the time to get out and about – tracksuit pants optional.

Why not tempt your significant other with a glass of vino and a picnic, set to some delightful music with the sunset lit National Arboretum as your backdrop? If you love the sound of that, you’re in luck: Voices in the Forest is back in Canberra for the sixth time, and it is bigger and better than ever.

For those of you who don’t know, Voices in the Forest is a classical concert that sees the likes of some of the best that the Opera world has to offer. Normally held at the National Arboretum Canberra, unfortunately due to poor weather predictions, this year’s concert will be held at Llewellyn Hall, ANU Arts Centre this year. But it most certainly doesn’t mean it’s going to be any less sensational.

The three headlining performers at this year’s performance are Sally-Ann Russell, Richard Troxell and the Great Sumi Jo (who was up for an Oscar this year!).

The event runs from 6.30pm to-9.30pm, and is a mixture of well-known operatic arias, Broadway and pop songs – so even if you’re not an opera buff you’re likely to hear some familiar tunes.

The concert is on Saturday 19 November, Don’t fret – if you are not quite ready to leave the comfort of your couch just yet, you have some time to prepare!

No date night would be complete without food and a drink, and Llewellyn Hall is walking distance from an array of restaurants and bars to suit every taste bud. Start the night with a cocktail at Parlour Wine Bar, tapas at Akiba (the duck dumplings are a must!) or share a delicious antipasto platter at Molly’s Speakeasy Bar.

After having a light meal, you’ll be ready to make your way over to the concert to experience a spectacular night full of powerful and passionate performances from some of the world’s best opera voices.

After the show concludes, and you’re still buzzing from the show, why not go for a late dinner at the divine Courgette Restaurant for a four-course dinner (be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment) or treat yourself to a fondue for two at Max Brenner in the beautiful Nishi building, New Acton.

Want to make your romantic night extra special? Then why not surprise your date with tickets to the cocktail function after the show. Enjoy canapés and wine and meet the superb artists in the AthenAeUm Room. The function will start immediately after the concert at 9.30pm and are $45, available to concert ticket holders only.
