Where are Canberra’s best hot chips?

There is without question, nothing better than the humble fried potato, the hot chip.

It is best consumed in the colder months and as we’re currently in the grips of the winter chill, there really is no better time to debate the location of the best hot chip in Canberra. The ability that potatoes have on the soul is something so magnificent, it warms and ignites a hunger that never seems to end until, well, you’ve reached the bottom of the bowl.

To begin the great debate, an established evaluation system needs to be implemented to best assess the contenders — the categorisation of chips according to: thickness and lengths, fry style, seasoning and the dipping sauce, as well as the where and how, when devouring this delicacy.

Jamie Oliver said it best when he said; “The ability potatoes have to get mega crispy on the outside and super-fluffy in the middle, when cooked, is so good.”

We’ve rounded up some of our favourites.

WHITE RABBIT

The first contender on our list is the White Rabbit cocktail bar. The bar itself is known for desserts and cocktails, however, it also specialises in late night treats. Their shoestring fries are served with aioli and rosemary salt, the best part? You can still order them off the menu after 11pm.

GREASE MONKEY

Grease Monkey is a burger joint on Lonsdale Street and their chips do not disappoint. Served with your choice of four different side options; Greasy’s Sauce (our favourite), GM relish, smokey maple bbq, habanero mayo or hot sauce. Greasy’s chips are thickly cut and are served with all burgers but also available as a snack. Takeaway is also available, if you prefer to enjoy their deep-fried goodness at home (or in your pajamas).

BUVETTE

Buvette’s french fries might not be as traditionally French as the rest of their menu but by gosh they are good. Served up as a side to their generous baguette-based sandwiches or with their melt-in-your-mouth steak, these chips are magnifique.

BLUE OLIVE

Looking for a quick lunchtime snack? Blue Olive serves their hot chips coated in a special selection of herbs and spices. Available alongside all sandwich lunch time orders, these hot chips are thickly cut and served with a golden crispy skin.

    The zaatar and feta chips from Mr Zee’s are also pretty yummo. And BurgerHero in Braddon has cheese and chilli waffle fries – also yum! I’ve also heard that Soul Cartel in The Hamlet does yummy spicy chips? Broddog has ones that have gruyere cheese on too. OK, I’ve now showed I eat chips way too often!

  • I had the best chips I’ve had in years at Cholo’s Peruvian Cuisine recently. They were the perfect accompaniment to some very excellent pisco sours (and the rest of the food was also great).
