Start collecting Collector Shiraz

A small Canberra District winery has taken out a major trophy at the 2016 National Wine Show of Australia.

Collector Wines has beaten strong competition to win the coveted Red Wine of Provenance trophy with its Marked Tree Red Shiraz.   This award is designed to recognise vineyards and wines of ‘provenance’, reflecting consistency of style and quality over time and is normally the province of larger and older producers.

The National Wine Show of Australia is Australia’s premier national show.  Wines must qualify through Australian regional and capital city wine shows, and special purpose competitions, to enter the premium and single vineyard classes.  These classes are open to award-winning wines only.

Entries to the Wine of Provenance class comprise three different vintages of the one wine spanning a minimum of ten years.  Collector first produced the Marked Tree Red in 2005, and therefore only became eligible to enter the class for the first time in 2016.

Collector’s owner and winemaker Alex McKay said “We started the winery with a pocket full of loose change and a vision for a wine made from the right variety grown in the right place”.

“Wine can be fashion-driven and it’s easy to get caught up blowing with the wind.  We stuck to our guns with the style, and this is the reward.”

National Wine Show Chair of Judges Jim Chatto described the winning wine as “a great set of beautifully perfumed, medium-bodied Shiraz.  They answered perfectly the theme of the award: great quality, with demonstrated longevity, and a real thread of provenance/style across all three vintages.”

Alex said “This is a win for Canberra District Shiraz.  People have already fallen in love with the ethereal, fragrant and spicy expression of Shiraz produced in this area.  The style is now recognised internationally, and this award franks the area’s Shiraz as one of Australia’s top-pedigreed wines.”

Previously, the 2005 Marked Tree Red has won the New South Wales Wine of the Year (in 2007), the 2009 Marked Tree Red the Best Shiraz Viognier at the Sydney Royal Wine Show (2009) and the Marked Tree Red Shiraz the Wine of Provenance Trophy at the 2016 Canberra Regional Wine Show.

Established in 2005, Collector Wines produces approximately 2500 dozen wine annually from the Canberra District.
