Cosy Canberra: Where to warm up this autumn

Mikaela Sergi

It might be blue skies at the moment but we all know that as soon as ANZAC Day hits, the weather goes downhill.

Catch ups with friends, family outings and date nights are starting the move indoors as the leaves fall. Avoid an accidentally chilly catch up at these cosy Canberra spots.

Parlour Wine Room

There are few things better on a chilly winter’s night than a great glass of red – and Parlour has more interesting drops than you can poke a stick at. But that’s not all.

The team has put together ‘winter warmer’ cocktails (think Espresso Martinis and more) to go with their delicious tapas menu and penny-wise lunch specials. The perfect place to curl up and while away a few hours.

Penny University

Worried about the frost this winter? Then escape the cold by enjoying some of Penny’s in-house roasted coffee. The café’s style originates from 17th Century coffee houses in London known as ‘penny universities’, where people would gather for the simple enjoyment of coffee and conversation.

But there’s more to this Kingston hot spot than just beans. Their meals are infamous for generous servings and interesting combinations such as their Green eggs and ham and Wonton noodle soup.

Maple and Clove

Maple and Clove, located in the Realm precinct in Barton, pride themselves on their locally sourced non-refined whole foods and meals catering for all your dietary requests. Be sure to check out the café’s breakfasts and lunches along with fresh smoothies and daily soups to fight off the winter frost.

Operated by award-winning ONA Coffee, The Cupping Room, located in the CBD, is the perfect place to enjoy your regular morning coffee along with their speciality breakfast and lunch meals. If you’re in a hurry no need to worry, just pop around the side of the café to find their perfectly designed take away station.

Oliver Brown

We are OBsessed with @taramilktea’s insane Oliver Brown spread! What an indulgent sight! #oliverbrown #OBsessed

There is nothing better than a Belgian hot chocolate as the leaves start to fall. Take the family on a chocolate-y quest as you dive into Oliver Brown. Don’t be afraid to dig into the café’s devilishly handcrafted desserts; they are just too hard to resist.

RICARDO’S

Perfect for families when you don’t want to hang out in the cold outside but the kids seem to have boundless energy, Ricardo’s is conveniently located next to a playground so kids can easily be watched from the comfort of indoors with a cup of something hot in your hands.

That’s before you even mention their new winter menu…

Movenpick

Movenpick, located on the Kingston Foreshore, is perfect for a sneaky treat after dinner. The name only might mean ‘delicious ice cream’ to you now, but their winter menu is as indulgent as it is warming.

Fox and Bow

A place for the whole family to enjoy this winter is Fox and Bow in Farrer. The café prides themselves on their amazing pastries and tarts along with smoothies and milkshakes that will leave the smaller members of the family’s eyes popping with excitement.

Pialligo Estate

We will be lighting all the fires in the #farmhouse this week. Come in and get warm by the fire 🔥

If you’re looking for fine Italian dining this winter then look no further than Italian and Sons on Lonsdale Street. Italian fare is pretty cosy as is, but when you add in their warming wine list, intimate interior and the fireplace in their cheeky hidden bar Barcaro, you have the ultimate winter date night destination.
