In yet another addition to the ever expanding horizon that is the Braddon food scene, Mood Food & Co have a new chef and a new menu in the works.

Matt Vogt worked previously in several well known and well loved venues, including Pulp Kitchen and Parlour Wine Room and is back in Canberra after a short stint in Newcastle and Sydney. Why? Because he is passionate about Canberra, loves the local food scene and thinks Canberra a great place to be a chef.

As a classically trained chef with a leaning towards food that has a French or Spanish influence, Matt is looking forward to brining some of these elements to the new menu at Mood Food & Co. His philosophy is simple. “I like good food that isn’t all about being pretentious. I think people will come back again and again for delicious, simple but clever food”.

I recently attended one of Mood’s surprise menu nights, which are held on the last Thursday of every month. These nights consists of a six course surprise degustation. You rock up and there’s no menu, just a scorecard and a pencil on each table. The staff are friendly, out-going and engaging and talk you through the six items on the menu as the night progresses. At the end of the night, the score cards are collected and the feedback is processed. Owner/operation, Kane, is determined that the feedback that customers provide during the night plays a big part in shaping changes to the menus.

The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, the wine was delicious and we chatted to a few of the other guests, who were clearly enjoying their night out as well. Our surprise degustation included some seriously tasty courses. The menus are never quiet the same, but here are a few that crossed our plates, to get you into Mood:

  • twice cooked mushroom and gruyere soufflé, prosciutto cream, parmesan crust and porcini soil
  • duck, sherry and mandarin pate, with mandarin crisp
  • beef fillet, seared scallops, celeriac and wild rice
  • Mixed berry parfait, pistachio crumble, citrus curd and hazelnut cream. 

The next surprise menu night is Thursday 30 April, 2015.
