Kitchen Karaoke: Top 10 songs to get your cook on

Chrissy Dupé

There’s a lot evidence to support the fact that music can have a positive effect on our wellbeing.

The latest research has shown that listening to music while you’re cooking can even improve your culinary skills.

Jim Carey karaoke

Lol, no.

But there’s no doubt that a little bit of karaoke cooking makes for a whole lot of awesomeness in the kitchen. We’ve all got that one song that, when it comes on, ain’t nothing can stop us from busting out the moves.

So now that the weather’s getting warmer and the days are getting longer, it’s time to put down the remote, step out of the trackies and dust off the barbie ready for party season.

Whether you’re rustling up some pancakes for brunch with friends, or cooking up a batch of moussaka for Sunday dinner, the perfect playlist can add that extra bit of magic to your food. And make you feel like a rockstar cooking it.

What I think I look like while I’m karaoke cooking.

What I actually look like.

Song choice is important too. Whipping up a soufflé? A touch of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to help it rise.

Smashing out an eye-watering curry? You’ll need a pinch of Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff.

I love lots of different kinds of music. But a mix of high-energy 80s power ballads, classic pop and R&B and thumping rock tracks is what’s on high rotation in my kitchen right now.

So here they are – my top 10 songs to get your cook on – for a little inspiration in the kitchen this weekend.

Well, what are you waiting for? Get into that apron and get air-punching!

#1 Need some more air in your meringue?

#2 The difference between a good and a great tomato pasta sauce.

#3 Maybe also consider investing in an oven mitt?

#4 Ok, these guys were definitely on drugs when they wrote this.

#5 Roller-skating waitresses and poodle mullets. Totes not relevant. But there is a cherry. And a pie.

#6 Glass of milk please.

#7 I don’t think they actually came to the yard for milk. Although it does look delicious.

#8 Remember, pre-heating the grill is important when barbecuing.

#9 Try to get some in the bowl too if possible.

#10 Get yourself and egg and beat it.

What’s your signature kitchen karaoke song?

Chrissy is a lover of lists and a self-confessed control freak. Her mission is to help other women with a strong need to be in control learn how to harness the power of their inner control freak and use it for good. Having lived through the devastation that being control freak without focus brings, and going out the other side stronger, Chrissy developed a series of hands-on, zero 'fluff' programs to help women control their freak, instead of letting it run them into the ground. Her philosophy is based on the little-known fact that control freaks are actually born for greatness... and that without them, the world would fall into disorganised chaos.
