Rutherglen: A Winery Walkabout

Josephine Walsh

Keen for an winter mini-break? The annual Rutherglen Winery Walkabout is one of the best wine festivals of the year – moseying around award-winning wineries, sampling delicious food whilst enjoying stunning scenery and a relaxed atmosphere makes for a great way to spend the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. And there’s still time to get your ticket.

The Rutherglen wine region is one of Victoria’s premier food and wine destinations, and is just under a four-hour drive from Canberra. The region is known for its outstanding wineries, local produce, cafes and restaurants. The Winemakers of Rutherglen are an inspiring collection of the best 19 wineries of the region including Stanton and Killeen, Morris Wines, All Saints Estate, and Campbells Wines, just to name a few.

Winery Walkabout started in 1974. The two-day festival held over Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June now attracts over 20,000 people who all come to experience and enjoy the different wineries.

If you’re a fan of red wine, then the Rutherglen region is possibly your idea of heaven – you’ll find plenty of varieties of bold shiraz, rich cabernet and intriguing durif that are ready to drink now, as well as stellar vintages which can be tucked into the cellar to be enjoyed in the years to come. The region is also world-famous for its decadent fortified wines, namely the luscious topaques and muscats, which are wonderful to enjoy on their own or over the top of your favourite desert.

For just $30, you’ll get you a wristband to give you access to all of wineries, plus a complimentary wine glass for sampling. Some of the vineyards offer premium tastings at an extra cost – slipping away from the crowds to taste some of the special vintages is definitely worth it! There are also extra events such as breakfasts, lunches and dinners planned for some of the wineries, but it’s ideal to contact them directly to see if there are places still available.

If you’re staying in Rutherglen, then the additional cost of the shuttle bus ($27 per person) is the way to go, as you can hop on and off at the wineries at your leisure. Staying just outside Rutherglen? There’s a return bus from Wahgunyah, Corowa, Yarrawonga, Mulwala, Bundalong, Wangaratta, Chiltern, Howlong, Albury and Wodonga to get you to and from the festival safely.
