Black Magic: A market for truffle lovers

HerCanberra Team

So you know about the “black gold” that are the Canberra region truffles.

And you’re aware that the Canberra Region Truffle Festival kicked off in June with the ceremonial (and downright adorable) Blessing of the Dogs.

But you’re a bit overwhelmed as to where to go from here. There are tastings, there are hunts, degustations, cooking classes, infused oils and butters and even truffle pizza. Where on earth are you supposed to start?

At the Truffle Festival Market Day at Westfield Woden, of course. In cosy Centre Court on Saturday 22 July, you’ll be able to learn, watch and yes, sample, the best the Canberra Truffle Festival has to offer – all in the one place.

But the stars of the day will undoubtedly be the truffle producers themselves with Tarago Truffles and Macenmist Black Truffles all making an appearance across the day. Learn from the experts as to how truffles are made, how they’re found (spoiler alert: cute dogs!) and what to do with them once they’re out of the ground and in your shopping bag.

Pungent and rare, cooking with truffles can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. In Centre Court, cooking demonstrations will take place with some of Canberra’s most accomplished chefs pairing up with truffle growers to show you exactly how to serve up the ingredient of the season.

Dishing up some of their favourites are:

  • 10AM: Darren Perryman, Pialligo Estate
  • 12PM: Alainer Chanter, Foodish
  • 2PM: Susan Kemenes, Dish it Up
  • 4PM: Macelle Schuter, Poachers Pantry

There will also be market stalls from:

  • Contentious Character
  • Wiley Trout
  • Great Southern Truffles
  • Pialligo Estate Smokehouse
  • Baked by Cath
  • Baker’s Delight
  • David Jones
  • Tails Will Wag
  • Blue Frog Truffles
  • Turralla Truffles

We’ve previously waxed lyrical about The Pop Inn and the amazing buzz they can bring to previously empty spaces with their portable boutique wine bar.

They’ll be ‘popping up’ on Bradley Street opposite San Churro serving up a selection of wines from Sholto, Kardinia, and Gallagher Wineries plus PACT Beers and mulled wine.

The Pop Inn will also have heaters and blankets so don’t be put off by the chill!

They’ll be open from 4PM – 8PM on Friday 21 July and 12PM – 6PM on Saturday 22 July.

For the smallest visitors to the Market Day there will be balloon bending, face painting and Cupcake Decorating with Kids Pantry! There will also be a Scooby Doo Jumping castle will be set up next to San Churro to provide some extra family fun.

Happening 10AM – 3PM on Saturday 22 June

From 11am – 2pm Kristen and Wilko plus the Mix 106.3 crew will be broadcasting live from Westfield Truffle Festival from 11am – 2pm. The Mix 106.3 Cruiser will also be on site with tons of fun giveaways located on Bradley St near San Churro.
