Canberra and Queanbeyan gyms with childminding

Christine Spicer

When my kids were younger there was nothing I liked more than going to the gym.

Although not popular to announce, it was more for the onsite childminding than for my burning desire to workout! Having time to re-focus, shower uninterrupted and chat with other adults made all the difference.

We are often told that we need to take care of ourselves, but it can be a hard task to add to the growing demands we place on ourselves. Research tells us that keeping physically active is great at helping to manage or minimise the likelihood of perinatal (while pregnant and after) depression and anxiety. Getting out of the house with the pram and going for a walk is one free option…but it can be too hot, too cold, raining, overcast, boring, nap time (my list of excuses is quite extensive!).

I’ve put the below list together so you can easily find a gym with onsite childminding near you. Contact each gym to find the best fit and deal you can – remember when joining a gym it’s totally acceptable to work at getting the best price for you (haggle hard!). Looking for a free option? Join

Looking for a free option? Join MEGA, the brainchild of Jennelle McAppin who wanted other mums to exercise with when she was on maternity leave. Two years on and MEGA is now operating across Australia.

In Canberra, MEGA offers over 30 free exercise sessions a week, plus low-cost options for specific sessions. Ranging from baby wearing yoga to boot camps, pram friendly walking groups, Mt Ainslie climbs, boxing, swimming and even a burlesque class (if you are planning to push your boundaries in 2017 then look no further, the requirements when I took this class was gloves, a whip and tassels!).

I love the ethos of MEGA, which is one of the reasons PANDSI is proud to partner with them. MEGA’s common goal is to support, encourage and motivate other mums in their health and fitness journey. All sessions are led by mums who volunteer their time. If like me, your insecurities hold you back, I encourage you to join the MEGA facebook group as a starting point. It won’t be long before you get the courage to get along to your first exercise session!

As much as we love our kids…it can be nice to get away from them ensure they are being well cared for while you take time out by yourself. The below Canberra and Queanbeyan gyms all boast childminding facilities. Often they run more than one session a day, a few offer Saturday sessions.

The price varies, from free to $7, although there are discounts for additional children and purchasing a ‘block’ of sessions. There are plenty of other fitness businesses who invite you to take your baby and kids along, but listed below are the ones that will take your kids off your hands for you.
