Canberrans to step into the light tomorrow

HerCanberra Team

The Canberra community will walk united tomorrow on World Suicide Prevention Day, 10 September, to remember those who have lost their lives to suicide, and to openly discuss suicide prevention in a supportive environment.

Inviting the Canberra community to walk Out of the Shadows and into the Light, Lifeline Canberra CEO, Carrie Leeson said suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44.

“In Canberra, we lose one person to suicide every week. Our Out of the Shadows walk will see us gather together on the steps of the Australian War Memorial to hear a tribute to the friends, family and other community members we have lost to suicide,” Carrie said.

“We will then walk together down Anzac Parade and back.

“By speaking openly about suicide, our community can join in the conversation around reducing suicide in Australia and removing social stigmas.

“As community members, we all have an important role to play in suicide prevention. We invite the Canberra community to join us on Sunday as we walk Out of the Shadows and into the Light.”

Out of the Shadows is a free community event held on Sunday, 10 September 2017 from 5.40am, starting at the Australian War Memorial.

Poppy’s cafe at the War Memorial will be open for breakfast after the walk.

As a mark of respect to those who have passed, attendees at the walk will be offered the opportunity to list the names of loved ones lost.

These individuals will be remembered and acknowledged at the beginning of the walk.
