Get Glowing: Meet Lola Berry

It’s been a long time coming, but it seems the world has finally come to realise the connection between health, wellbeing and beauty.

Lola Berry is leading the charge when it comes to wellness and beauty from the inside out, having penned seven books on the subject, the latest of which is Food to Make You Glow.

Lola is one of the influencers and experts who’ll be making the journey to Canberra to host masterclasses – a continuing feature of the sparkly new Monaro Mall beauty and wellness precinct in the Canberra Centre that opens on 13 July.

We caught up with Lola to chat about beauty, wellness and how to get that lit-from-within glow.

Can you tell us a bit about your approach to beauty?

I like to mix it up – for me, it’s about trying things on and seeing how they go. I love eye masks and facemasks, and I’m always whipping up new creations. I focus on staying hydrated too.

When do you feel your most beautiful?

When I’m out in nature or doing yoga – times when I have no make up on at all.

What does beauty mean to you?

It means to live from the heart – that’s when you really glow. Inner beauty is what’s magical.

What are some mistakes that you’ve made, or that you’ve seen other women make, when it comes to health and beauty?

The big one is comparing yourself to others. I did it for years and you know what? I’m never going to look like a Victoria’s Secret model! It took a long time but the trick is to start loving you for who you are.

Who do you see as a beauty icon?

Anyone who is living their passion. The icon that I’ve always looked up to is Steve Irwin but when it comes to beauty, here are some that I reckon are pretty inspiring: my best friend Linda, she’s so special and wise beyond her years, she’s one of the most beautiful people I know. Princess Diana was also pretty special, she did a lot for others, and that makes her extra beautiful.

When it comes to beauty, do you have any rituals or routines that you practice?

I do love a good eye mask and face mask, and would do two or three a week. I also like mist toners, they make me really happy – especially when I’m flying because they prevent my skin from drying out.

Are there any particular beauty products you swear by?

I love natural stuff but I am also partial to the GLAMGLOW face masks and Kate Somerville exfoliant – both from MECCA.

All women face pressure from media (social and other) and society in general about what beauty is or should look like. How do you deal with that kind of pressure?

Some days it’s easy and other days it can be quite challenging. I had someone walk up to me in public and tell me they’d watched my TV segment that morning, they then went on to tell me that I should never wear yellow because it makes me look “pudgy”. I was also told I was a disgrace to the nutrition industry because of the way I dressed, how could I be taken seriously. So those days were challenging. But to be honest, as long as the people I care about like who I am and I’m being real and living from the heart, then the negative comments are just like water off a duck’s back.

Aside from your Beauty Masterclass, what projects are you working on that we can look forward to? 

There’s a new book out in November which I’m really excited about, it’s full of beauty hacks that I can’t wait to see come to life!
