Her Say: Issue of the Week

Laura Peppas and Hayley O'Neill

Last week our own Amanda Whitley presented at the Australian Institute of Management (AIM)’s Great Debate, where the topic at hand was “Are today’s women expected to do it all?” It’s an interesting question, and one that got us thinking…exactly what is ‘it’ and who expects ‘it’ of us? To find out, we asked some of the women in the audience “Are women expected to do it all?”

“I think as a society we are changing, and women aren’t necessarily expected to do it all – men take more of a share in duties now, there aren’t the same unrealistic expectations out there.” Sagreeta, Yarralumla

“I think there is an expectation from society that we have to do it all – all being have a great job, raise kids, clean, cook, and nurture others. There seems to be a greater expectation that we will take care of everything, but it’s hard to pinpoint why that is.” Jessie, Curtain

“I don’t think society expects us to do it all, I think it’s the pressure we put on ourselves more than anything – women can be quite hard on themselves and think they need to do it all, when really we should give ourselves a break sometimes.” Jean, Pearce

“I think as the old saying goes, ‘you can have some of it some of the time but you can’t necessarily have all of it all of the time.’  I think as your life changes, your expectations have to change as well and people have to be realistic about what we can or can’t do.” Roma, Campbell
