ACTION + Uber = A safer festive season

HerCanberra Team

Staying safe during Canberra’s festive season just got a little easier.

The ACT Government’s Night Rider bus service will partner with Uber from this weekend (2 December) to provide Canberrans with more choice on how they travel around our city on Friday and Saturday nights during December.

“The festive season is a time when more people are travelling to the city to celebrate and the new Night Rider service will allow people to enjoy a night out while also travelling home in comfort and safety,” Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

For those who struggle to decide between an expensive Uber or taxi home and unsafe but cheap options such as walking, this might be a game changer.

“This great new service will run along Red and Blue Rapid routes between the City and major city centres including Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden and Tuggeranong until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights during the festive season.

“Night Rider now includes a partnership with Uber to help passengers travel the ‘last mile’ home from major bus stations. Patrons will benefit from Uber promotional codes to get $10 off their ride home between 11pm and 2.30am.

“This partnership is an Australian-first and is part of the ACT Government’s plans to use innovation to improve public transport for Canberrans.

“We are also encouraging people to walk, ride, get picked up friends or grab a taxi for the last leg of their journey home. Transport Canberra has also engaged with the taxi industry to help the suburban link for passengers from the major stations where the Rapid services end.

“The new Night Rider service will run every 20 minutes, except on New Year’s Eve, when they will run every 10 minutes.

“This service is a major improvement on the previous service that many Canberrans are familiar with. This new service will be operating on Friday and Saturday nights over the next few weeks. Regular cash fares apply on the new Night Rider services or, for the cheapest fare, simply tap on and tap off with MyWay.

“This year’s service will run on 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 31 December 2016, with increased services for the Spilt Milk festival on Saturday 3 December and New Year’s Eve on Saturday 31 December.

“Northside services will depart Platform 5. Southside services will depart Platform 7. Transport Canberra Transport Officers and Customer Services staff will be present during new Night Rider hours of operations.

“The new Night Rider provides you with the opportunity to get in and out between major town centres this festive season by extending our Rapid services through to 2am. It also provides another active travel option for Canberrans attending festivities over the next few weeks. I’d really encourage Canberrans to plan their activities with the New Night Rider in mind.

“The introduction of later night transport benefits the night time economy for our city as it helps move people all around Canberra, not just out of the City Centre.

“The service is being promoted through television, radio, social media and on the Transport Canberra website. On-the-ground promotion will also take place on each night of operation with Transport Canberra staff distributing information and timetables.”

More information on the new Night Rider, including a downloadable timetable, will be available at www.transport.act.gov.au
