Native Beauty: Dilkara Essence of Australia

Samara Gentle
lilly pilly

Aboriginal tribes long ago discovered the therapeutic properties of this bush native, the Lilly Pilly – a small exotic fruit with a clove-like fragrance. Traditionally used for its healing and anti-bacterial properties, it also has a high vitamin C and anti-oxidant content, and fruit acids to exfoliate the skin.

It takes a truly business savvy and dedicated woman to take a business and brand that step further and create a line of products. But local businesswoman and creative Julie Okeley has done just that.

With over 20 years experience in the hair industry including owning her own salons, Julie decided to challenge her passion and knowledge (of hair), and take it to the next level.

Using only sustainably harvested organic elements from the vast Australian bush, the Dilkara story is from a 40,000 year old culture and is Julie’s very own haircare product range using all natural ingredients.

With the inclusion of intellectually protected natural bush essence blends unique to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia, the Dilkara Essence Of Australia haircare range is infused with traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander native bush essences that understand the harsh Australian climate.

From lilly pillies to the Kakadu plums, lemon myrtle and wattle seed, each has its own unique properties that are carefully picked using Julie’s knowledge of the land and blended into the divine products she has created.

Using native botanical ingredients, the haircare range is Australian certified organic meaning no nasties are going into your skin or hair, and infused with traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander native bush essence blends unique to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia.

Some of her lines include:

mundaiEurca – Sleek Shampoo to give your hair a natural beautiful shine.

Yallaroo – Colour Enhancing Shampoo to get your professional colour jobs in tip top shape.

Dilkara Essence of Australia – Colour Enhancing Conditioner to compliment the Yallaroo Shampoo.

Akuna – A deliciously smelling detangling spray for those prone to knotty hair.

Adina – Thermal Protectant spray that helps protect your hair when using straighteners, curlers and hair dryers.

Mudai – Weightless Leave-In Treatment to nourish your hair.

Nannup – Curl Enhancer to embrace your natural hair and get some great botanical bounce.

Drawing on her Aboriginal heritage, Julie wanted her business to reflect the true essence of who she is and says Dilkara was created to provide a commercial and cultural linkage between the global consumer community and the cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians and so Dilkara was born.

It means rainbow in Aboriginal and its spirit spreads across the wide land we call Australia while the symbol is a rainbow serpent straight from the Dreamtime, with a body of ochre representing the vast land and the head of the blue sea.

With Christmas around the corner, Julie’s products would make for a beautiful hair care hamper, or even just a few little treats for yourself!
