FASHFEST’s cross-Tasman connection

HerCanberra Team

There’s so much to love about New Zealand design and this year FASHFEST guests will get a major fix of what the country’s innovative fashion industry truly represents.

FASHFEST 2017 showcases 11 NZ labels, some in individual segments and some in curated shows.

Momento Dezigns presents five labels, including Trelise Cooper, one of NZ’s most successful exports. Ros Wright from Momento—which has offered high-end fashion in Canberra for 20 years—says Trelise Cooper’s deconstructed designs are unashamedly feminine.

“We love the romantic contrasting colour palettes, whether subdued or eclectic vivids and the many textures,” says Ros. “A Trelise piece is always outstanding.”

Momento also presents three Trelise Cooper auxiliary labels, each designed for a different demographic. Coop and Cooper, generally more attractive to younger woman, offers garments from casual to luxurious but always highly wearable.

“It’s fun and sophisticated all mixed in one,” says Ros, “and will also look fabulous on the catwalk.” Curate explores the blurred lines between fashion and fine art. Curate is for corporate women who want to express their individuality.

Sabatini

In another segment, Momento presents Sabatini, a luxury brand designed for women wanting effortless, natural, easy-care knit dressing. Many yarns are sustainable and eco-friendly and the seasonal prints are stunning. All garments are designed and manufactured in Auckland.

One of the hottest designers to grace the catwalk this year is the classy and oh-so-stylish Paula Ryan, presented by Nunie. One of New Zealand’s most cherished fashion exports, this label is worshipped by many. Paula Ryan is devoted to comfortable, high-quality clothing made of natural fibres that breathe. The fabrics—colour fast and high performing—include New Zealand Merino, Italian MicroModal and Italian MicroJersey. Nunie’s owner, Roxanne Ebina, carries Paula Ryan essentials and selected pieces from seasonal collections.

Susan Taylor, from the Department of the Exterior, is pulling together a segment showcasing looks by NYNE. This upmarket, independent label is based in Mount Maunganui and made in New Zealand.

“NYNE is always about the wearer,” says Susan. “The Spring/Summer 18 season, called “image 18”, draws inspiration from Andy Warhol’s polaroid-based Portrait seasons. The asymetric shapes and fluid fabrics lend themselves to an uncomplicated layering of pieces.”

Kowtow

Kowtow

Assemblage Project is featuring three New Zealand designers. Kowtow is for independent women who don’t compromise on style and ethics. This is comfortable, well cut, sustainable and ethical clothing. Senorita AweSUMO empowers ethical and conscious consumers with unique, environmental fashion. The AUNTY garments are individually cut and sewn, many one-off designs. All labels will be available at an exhibition Assemblage Project will host in-store after FASHFEST.

Melanie Child, an independent boutique womenswear label based in Dunedin is a FASHFEST fave. This is her third appearance on the catwalk. The label focuses on upcycling and sustainable fabric choices with creative redesign of pre-loved denim a signature. Melanie creates beauty from the unwanted and wasted—timeless garments transcending seasonal restraints.

New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia, Chris Seed, says “New Zealand fashion design is as diverse and distinct as our country’s geography. Our fashion industry is growing rapidly internationally, with Australia our biggest market by far. New Zealand’s participants in FASHFEST reinforces a view of both countries as nations of contemporary innovation and creativity.”
