Local fitness fashion: CBR’s hottest picks

Ashleigh Went

I love shopping for heels and dresses as much as the next lady but when it comes to my workout wardrobe, we’re talking a whole other level of obsession. Fitness fashion is about so much more than looking good—it’s about feeling good! It’s about clothes and accessories that move with you, enhance your performance, and, yes—to some degree—keep you looking hot.

You work hard to stay healthy and strong, and shopping for new fitness gear is the perfect reward for all that time and effort you’ve spent in the gym, studio or outdoors training. Plus, nothing motivates you like a fresh pair of runners or yoga tights.

So without further adieu, here are my top five picks of where to buy the hottest fitness fashion in Canberra.

Sportsmans Warehouse

Ever since it left the city, I sort of forgot about Sportsmans Warehouse. Boy, have I been missing out!

The Whyalla Street store in Fyshwick is now one of my favourites stores. Ever. It’s absolutely beautiful with a massive selection of premium brands including Nike, Adidas, 2XU, Skins, Running Bare, Speedo, and so many more.

One of the best things about this store is the level of effort the team have gone to. There’s motivational signs amongst the clothing racks, mannequins complete with biceps and booties, a huge wall of brightly coloured shoes and a fantastic boxing area with stock from up and coming brand Red Corner.

Workout by the water with Sportsmans Warehouse. Get the look: Adidas Women’s Techfit Moulded Bra, $39.99. Adidas Women’s Climachill Tank, $49.99. Adidas Womens Infitnite Series Techfit Capri Tight, $59.99. Adidas Linear Performance Small Team Bag, $34.99. Asics Gel Noosa Tri 10Womens Running Shoe, $199.99.

The outfits pictured were phenomenal complete with bright colours and innovative details. The orange Adidas Climachill Tank has little silver beads in the inside designed to keep you cool during hot and sweaty workouts and the bright Asics Gel Noosa shoes are a favourite of both myself and the gorgeous Amanda Whitley!

I’m a massive Nike fan and loved the comfort, flexibility and bright colours of the Nike Free 5.0 shoes, especially paired with the blue Legend 2.0 tights. The grey Balance Print Tank wasn’t something I would have picked off the rack, but I loved it on, especially over the pink compression bra.

This outfit is enough to brighten up any workout. Get the look: Nike Women’s Pro Fierce Bra, $59.99. Nike Women’s Balance Print Tank, $39.99. Nike Women’s Legend 2.0 Poly Capri ¾ Tight, $59.99. Nike Varsity Duffel Bag, $59.99. Nike Free 5.0 Women’s Running Shoe, $159.99

Babalu Australia Canberra

Babalu is a really unique brand. Sharan Robb stocks a large range of Babalu clothing from her home in Erindale and can often be seen at fitness community events such as the Get Active Expo.

Babalu is actually a Columbian brand and—get ready for it—made for women with curves! That being said, everything comes in one size fits all, so it’s worth trying things on before you buy.

Walking in comfort with Babalau. Get the look: T-back Crops in black and yellow, $32 each. . ¾ Tights tights, $75.

I love love love the Babalu stock. The T-back crop was one of my favourites with its flattering and sexy mesh detail while the Babalu tights are some of the comfiest I’ve ever tried. The three quarter tights with their reverse printed legs are such a unique feature and right on trend.

The added bonus is that there’s a new range arriving soon in Babalu’s signature bright colours and prints so be sure to keep an eye out. This is a brand that should be on every workout girl’s wish list.

Lorna Jane

You can’t make a fitness fashion destination list without including Lorna Jane. It’s one of my personal favourites – the majority of my fitness wardrobe is LJ, and for good reason too. The quality is top end with great fabrics, long lasting colours and flattering cuts. You really get the impression that everything is made with love—and I adore the challenge of finding the cute little hidden red love hearts that LJ clothes include in the design.

The February collection has just landed and as you can see from these outfits—it’s gorgeous. There’s lots of bright colours with acid yellow, hot pink and bright blue, but also lots of grey and black with detailing that includes mesh and laser cuts—like these hot black tights!

This Fit Girl knows how to get the look with Lorna Jane: Fit Girl Bra, $65.99. Existence Maxum jacket, $99.99. Stylin’ 7/8 Tight, $92.99. Ventilator Visor, $29.99

I love the flattering cut of this yellow Excel top, and the mono running shorts are so comfy with a wide waist band. I love layering, particularly when the weather can sometimes be a bit fickle, so a well fitting, stretchy jacket over a crop is always a good option. There’s more great pieces for layering in store that carry you from the warmer months right through to icy winter mornings.

Lorna Jane is also a great stop for accessories – I love the silicone coated glass water bottle and the visor – especially handy on hot runs where you need sun protection but not the heat that can come with a full cap.

Summer S/Slv Excel Top $65.99, Deco Bra (worn underneath), $65.99. Existence Run Short, $65.99, Iconic Glass Water Bottle, $35.99

Rockwear

Rockwear is another great quality brand with the added bonus of being mostly manufactured in Australia. The Rockwear store in Westfield Belconnen is decked out with stock in a range of colours, prints and textures.

One of my favourite pieces from Rockwear is their booty shorts—especially this cute green pair! I love the way they smooth over your hips and flatter your behind. They’re made of really stretchy, comfy fabric and are perfect for almost any workout including running, yoga and weight training.

What are you weight-ing for? Get the look: “Megan” Supplex V Neck Crop Top, $59.99. “Jodie” Print, Drymesh Action Singlet, $65.99. “Candice” Booty Shorts, $49.99. Cap with 3D Embroidery, $29.99. Water Bottle, $9.99. Yoga Mat, $39.99.

I also loved the green and black crop worn under the Karinda white top. The bright green looks beautiful paired with the black mesh, and the bra was comfy but still supportive.

Rockwear do prints really, really well. I loved the Rio pink tights which despite being bright can be paired with a huge range of colours. The 7/8 length is a really great choice for carrying you through to the colder months.

Another good choice for accessories, Rockwear stock a range of quality yoga mats, drink bottles, gym bags, head bands and more.

Lulu Lemon Athletica

Lulu is always firmly on my wish list for high quality fitness fashion! Their store in the Canberra Centre is massive with an equally impressive range of stock and cute features like faux grass.

The staff are always friendly and know their stock inside out. As we move out of summer, Store Manager Olivia Barlett-Marques describes the 2015 trends to watch in store including a technical layering system. Base layers will comprise of moisture wicking, bacteria inhibiting fabrics and out outer layers will have waterproof finishes and 360-degree reflective details for low-light activities outside. But all the detailing will be feminine and include mesh, fresh prints and gathering.

I love that Lulu has a range that you can feel just as confident wearing out for coffee or lunch as you would in a yoga class or the gym. One of their newest arrivals is the gorgeous Stash It tights in a pebble print that are perfect for cardio with little pockets to stash your things and strategic mesh panels to assist with airflow when you’re working up a sweat.

I adore their accessories too—particularly their gym bags like this Gym to Win Duffel bag with straps to hold your yoga mat and nylon fabric that you can easily wipe out to keep things clean and fresh.

LuLuLemon
