H&M opens tomorrow at Canberra Centre

Beatrice Smith

Another Swedish retail giant has come to town, and to say that Canberra is excited is an understatement.

I still remember my first H&M experience at age 16, desperately trying to decide what to spend my pocket money on as Paris Christmas crowds surged around me. Everything was affordable and achingly-trendy and I remember being torn between a sparkly headband and the perfect dress for New Year’s Eve.

Seven years later in 2014, Australia got its first H&M—a mammoth four stories of fashion, beauty, accessories and homewares in Melbourne’s historic GPO building, meaning that its joys were no longer reserved for overseas travel. And from tomorrow, Canberrans will need to go no further afield than Civic.

For the uninitiated, H&M (Hennes and Mauritz) is a veritable trove of on-trend clothing, accessories, beauty and homewares. The price point is decidedly affordable, with H&M’s Premium and Conscious lines costing a little bit extra for quality construction or 100% sustainable materials.

With the grand opening set for 10am tomorrow, we’re predicting lines around the block. Here are some of the reasons why.

Gifting is hard and sometimes painfully expensive. Office presents, cousin presents, large friendship group presents, Kris Kringle—the list goes on.

Why not take the monogramming trend to your earlobes with this adorable set of studs ($14.99)? Paired up as initials they would also make the perfect thank you gift or Secret Santa.

For the boot camp enthusiast in your life, what about this sparkly water bottle? And for the one with the fur baby, how does a pet Santa suit sound? Yes, really.
