Peachy Keen: Canberra’s cutest shoes

Debby Harrington

Canberra ladies, start putting away some of your hard earned dollars because a new shoe and accessories store is opening in Braddon in less than a week.

The woman behind the super chic boutique Rebel Muse is branching out and opening Peachy Keen.

Alicia Xyrakis says a second store was always on the cards and with no mixed shoe shops in the city, there was a gap in the market.

“Rebel Muse is such a small store and there are so many brands not yet represented in Canberra so when it comes to shoes we just wanted to give them a bigger representation and grow Rebel Muse to offer more to the Canberra customer,” she says.

“It just seemed like a natural progression. Hopefully, it gets Canberra recognised a little bit more as a shopping destination.”

Alicia says she wanted store number two to be a little different to the original.

“Rebel Muse is very monochromatic and the name has quite a strong meaning when you think about what the two words mean and it evokes some emotion,” she says.

“Shoes and accessories should be more fun, you can change them up a lot, they can really change your outfit, give you a different personality, be someone else and that’s what I wanted Peachy Keen to be.

“The name actually comes from the movie Grease. There’s a line where Rizzo says ‘Peachy keen jelly bean’ and I’ve always just liked that saying.”

The timing for store number two was a little tighter than Alicia expected but when Unit Concepts closed down three shops away on Lonsdale street, with the perfect fit out, it became the right time.

“It definitely was a stretch but we’re lucky Rebel Muse did take off quite well and I’m able to do both,” she says. “I’m lucky as well that my boyfriend is now also a business partner and he’s been a really good help as well.”

Stocking the shelves was a little harder than Alicia imagined, as she hunted for high end, on trend footwear.

“Australia’s got awesome things going for it in terms of fashion and clothing and some designers that are highly regarded internationally,” she says.

“With footwear, unfortunately, Australia isn’t quite at that calibre in terms of quality, styles, trends and it has been super hard getting international footwear brands in when you’re still a fairly new business.”

But the ones gracing the shelves are nothing to look down on with brands including Senso, Siren, Robert Robert, Jaggar and Mode Collective.

For bags there’s Dylan Kain and The Wolf Gang bags, 66 The Label for hats and scarves and Sunday Somewhere and Elizabeth and James sunglasses.

It has been a labour of love for Alicia who has been working seven days a week to get the doors to Peachy Keen open.

“I always joke with my friends, we have a saying it’s two under two because I talk of them as my babies and I feel that’s how much work the stores take,” she says.

Peachy Keen’s grand opening is this Saturday October 22 from 10am to 5pm and there’ll be balloons and fairy floss to celebrate as well as shoes! In the meantime, you can find them on Instagram here.
