Road test: Laser Clinics Australia

Ryan Johnstone

When most men hear the word ‘laser’ I’m sure most of them would think of Luke Skywalker’s trusty lightsabre.

But what if I told you that lasers can be hugely useful to your morning routine (and not in a ‘don’t come near me til I’ve had my coffee’ weapon-wielding kind of way)?

A ‘beauty’ technique once considered to be reserved for women is steadily becoming just as popular for men, and not only could it help you save time, but it could also improve your skin. I’m talking about laser hair removal.

I don’t know about other men but I’ve needed to shave my face every single morning for many years. Not only does it take up precious minutes that could be added to my sleep (something I take very seriously) but it often leads to ingrown hairs and shaving rash, especially on my neck. So anything that could make this avoidable was something I was happy to try.

So how does it work? Laser hair removal works by directing concentrated light into the hair follicle, inhibiting the hair’s ability to grow without damaging the skin. The lasers are sensitive and safe enough to be used on any part of your body, as well as on any skin type. Yes, even on your face.

THE CONSULTATION

My first appointment at Laser Clinics Australia’s Belconnen salon consisted of a quick consultation. The laser technicians met with me to discuss where I wanted the treatment, how to prepare for the treatments, and what would be involved after the treatment. Owner Borka Buseska explained everything to me in simple and clear terms, answering any questions and concerns I had. One thing I didn’t expect to hear was how many male clients they have, from professional athletes from the AIS to local rugby teams and, of course, average everyday blokes.

THE FIRST SESSION

Going into my first session I had no idea what to expect. Almost everyone I spoke to explained to me that it’s relatively painless and the feeling of it is similar to being flicked with a small rubber band. They were right, and while it was uncomfortable to begin with, the insignificant pain was only felt for a fraction of a second.

All up the process took less than 15 minutes to do my cheeks, the front of my neck, and the back of my neck— seriously quick. I remember going to a 9am appointment and being back in my car by 9.15am.

THE RESULTS

Even after my first session I began to see results. On the front of my neck I could literally see the lines of where the laser had been (don’t worry, this goes away after a few sessions), and I was already seeing a reduction of hair on my cheeks. Cut to today after three sessions and I now only need to shave once every few days. The laser has dramatically reduced the amount of hair and slowed the growth of the remaining hair. Laser Clinics Australia recommends 6-10 treatments for optimum results so I can just imagine the results after a few more treatments!

The treatments are effective, but they’re also very affordable. Laser hair removal for the face begins at just $7 per treatment – up to $42 dollars for full face. This isn’t a huge amount of money when you compare it to the price of fresh razors every month and it’s a long-term solution that saves you money and time.
