Spring Racing Makeup 101

Debby Harrington

What to wear for the Spring racing carnival gets all the attention.

But what about finishing off your outfit with the perfect complimentary makeup? I’ve narrowed down three makeup looks for whether you’re heading to the track for Melbourne Cup or hanging with your friends on Ladies Day (not to mention all the other events in between).

These looks can even work for a day enjoying the sunshine with friends or a night out partying it up.

GO FOR BOLD

Unknown

The most simple of these looks has to be the bold lip. Keep your eye makeup simple. Consider a nude eyeshadow, a soft eyeliner and mascara. I’ve gone for a light coloured eyeshadow with a hint of a shimmer and chose to actually use an eyeshadow as my liner, to keep it softer. I just used a small angled brush to apply it. Don’t forget to shake off the excess to ensure none falls onto your cheeks.

Firstly, keep your eye makeup simple. Consider a nude eyeshadow, a soft eyeliner and mascara. I’ve gone for a light coloured eyeshadow with a hint of a shimmer and chose to actually use an eyeshadow as my liner, to keep it even softer. I just used a small angled brush to apply it but don’t forget to shake off the excess to ensure none falls onto your cheeks.

Speaking of cheeks, go for a hint of bronzer and highlighter. If you don’t want to go the whole contour thing, use bronzer as a blush and a touch of highlighter on the high points of the cheekbones.

Then show off those lips. I’m wearing Model Rock’s new vivid lip shaper in Vampiress but if you’re not keen on something as dark, you can opt for a bright pink or plum or even the trusty red. Just remember, make sure it can be seen from one end of the racetrack to the other.

PAINT IT PINK

Next up, I went for some colour, which is very unusual for me, especially on my eyes. But it’s spring and we can and there are some really great colours returning to our makeup palettes as the weather warms up.

Pink is a colour that will suit most people and you can layer the colour to make it stand out as much as you feel comfortable. I chose to cover the whole lid in one colour rather than opt for a contrast, to keep it simple and I also left out the eyeliner to keep it soft and pretty.

I chose to go with a pink blush on the apples of my cheeks (rather than a bronzer) to tie the look together and added a hint of highlighter on the high points of my cheeks.

For my lips, I picked a subtle pink from Harlotte Cosmetics called Birthday Suit. The eyes are still the focus of this look.

Oranges are so on trend right now and another good option for eyeshadow. There are some great orange tinged lippies out there as well including Lucille by Napoleon, which I am loving.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE

Unknown-1

Finally, I couldn’t go past a smoky eye look but I kept it subtle because this will work for both race day and wherever you go at night.

To start, I used a light brown eyeshadow as a base and then added to it with a darker brown across the creases and outer edges of the eye. A thin line of eyeliner makes the look a little bolder and a few layers of mascara just finish it all off and add a hint more drama.

Want more? You can up the liner or chuck on some fake lashes to take it up a notch.

On my cheeks, I went with Nars Laguna bronzer to contour and add colour and highlighter on the high points of my cheeks again. I am a big fan of Champagne Pop from Becca Cosmetics. It just grabs the light and glides on really well.

On my lips, I went for a subtle nude from Avon called Cocoa Kisses. It’s a good mix of brown and pink.

So now we’re ready for the races!
