The Red Segment

It goes unsaid that FASHFEST has a heart for fashion.

This year, the event is splashing red on the carpet in support of women with heart disease.

‘The Red Segment’ features custom-made pieces by nine designers showcasing new collections at FASHFEST 2016. The pieces will be all red or feature red. The diversity of design couldn’t be more diverse—think sophisticated glam, everyday wearable, evening wear and added punch with boxing gloves. Yup. Boxing gloves.

FASHFEST co-founders, Clint and Andrea Hutchinson, were approached by the Heart Foundation to help raise awareness of heart disease, which is the number one killer of Australian women (despite many thinking it’s breast cancer).

“We had no idea it was the number one killer,” said Clint. “We thought a fashion show would be a heartfelt way to draw attention to this serious issue. We put a call out to this year’s group of amazing designers, asking who could create a custom-made garment featuring red. Many responded instantly—so many we knew FASHFEST could curate an entire Red Segment.”

Several designers who are new to FASHFEST this year are participating in the segment.

A’au Elei, from New Zealand, with a strong background in Pacific Island design, will participate. So will Eder by Anna from Sydney, with its decidedly French aesthetic and garments made with the highest quality of leathers and fabrics sourced from Germany, Italy and Japan.

VFP is also new to FASHFEST. Based in Canberra, this label sees fashion as an art form. Elle Hopwood, who joins two other Cooma fashion designers as part of ‘Fashionation Cooma’, will participate. Elle specialises in day wear, formal wear, costumes and that ‘perfect little black dress’.

Canberra’s well-known designer, Karen Lee, will produce a piece that can truly be described as contemporary sophistication. Another well-known local designer, Yumi Morrissey, from Zilpah Tart, will create a feminine design that will flatter the female shape.

SZN, an independent label from Melbourne (who retails here in Canberra at Assemblage Project), will produce a soulful and intelligent piece—designer Suzan Dlouhy is so well-known for this aesthetic.

To add a one-two combo, Red Corner will showcase a new design that will feature on its funky, functional and fitting boxing gear after FASHFEST. Bam. And last, but not least, shoes by fletcherLovell will appear in ‘The Red Segment’ as will an accessory by Rasa Mauragis from Cooma.
