What to wear to Fashfest 2015

Hayley O'Neill

Finally — an annual event in Canberra where we can dive deep into our wardrobes and emerge in our most luxury fashion garments and accessories that we keep hidden away for only those special occasions. An event so fabulous that we have an excuse to call the babysitter, shave the legs, wear your most expensive perfume…and if you need to splash out a little on a new outfit.

Fashfest 2015, Canberra’s four-day fashion event kicks off this Wednesday the 13 May and is the perfect event to channel your inner fashion goddess. Good news being that this year FASHFEST will be held at the National Convention Centre, which is heated space meaning you don’t need to rug up to keep warm, as in previous years. Instead you can get glammed up and create a standout look without hiding under your overcoat.

When thinking about what to wear for this year’s Fashfest, it’s time to embrace the YOLO phrase — You Only Live Once attitude. In fashion, it means wear whatever you like and look fabulous while doing it. Who cares what anyone else thinks because you only live once?

This is the one event in Canberra where you can embrace your unique style and stand out from the crowd. We all own those pieces — clothes and accessories that we’re too afraid to wear out but that’s why FASHFEST is the perfect opportunity!

Now for the dreaded question what to wear? Here are my three top style tips to achieve a stand out look at Fashfest 2015. By following these points, finding an outfit and knowing how to express your style will be easy…

Be Bright With Colour

With the winter weather it’s easy to play it safe and just wear black but when dressing for Fashfest the more colour the better. Miranda Sakhino is your go to label for all things bright and beautiful, exploring colourful prints in classic silhouettes.

The designs appeal to the modern, polished, cosmopolitan woman who is style conscious, loves fashion and appreciates clothing that is functional and timeless. By pairing a bright dress with some bright accessories you definitely won’t be missed on the Fashfest red carpet. You can catch Miranda Sakhino and her collection on the catwalk at Friday night’s show.

Be Daring With Print

Prints are always so much fun to experiment with especially when dressing up for something like Fashfest. Prints are extremely easy to style — just pick your favourite tones from the print and match it with what’s in your wardrobe. You can also go the complete opposite and pair the print with pieces that completely clash.

Both options are standouts; it just depends on your personal taste. When immersing in the Canberra culture at Fashfest, why not wear a print that reflects it? The latest collection of Zilpah Tart dresses feature the Parliament House print and they are fabulous. They are striking, eye catching and the best way to fully immerse yourself in our city and our culture. Zilpah Tart will be showcasing at Fashfest on closing night – Saturday.

Be Unique With Silhouette

Having the right silhouette is key to looking modern at Fashfest. Exploring unique draping, cuts and panelling accentuates your style with complete individuality. Complement these unique silhouettes by making them the feature of your outfit.

The best way to do that is by accessorising with pieces that don’t take away the attention but rather enhance the shape. Achieve the look by styling the garment with belts, cropped jackets and stockings to enrich the outfit. Sovata is your go to designer for finding a unique silhouette with garments created using an innovative zero waste pattern-making technique that allows the designer, Jade Sargent, to construct unique garments and millinery. Sovata works with a wide range of fabrics and bright colours that create the perfect outfit for Fashfest. Discover Sovata on the catwalk at Fashfest this Friday.

So with Fashfest now around the corner, I hope that the big question of ‘what am I going to wear?’ has been made a lot easier. Just remember to think about print, colour or silhouette when putting together your perfect outfit for Canberra’s biggest fashion event of the year.

Don’t forget we’ll be keeping an eye out for you in our Street Style Fashfest edition this week and can’t wait to see what you’ll be wearing!
