Jess and Matt’s rusic winter wedding

HerCanberra Team

Jess and Matt’s winter wedding was a rustic, heartfelt affair with a fun-filled reception (and a stunning Rockstars & Royalty dress.)

We asked the lovely bride to take us through the big day.

THE DRESS

My wedding dress was probably my greatest fashion decision ever. I saw [Rockstars and Royalty designer] Vicky Kidd-Gallichan’s Cherries in the Snow collection at FASHFEST and fell in love with her ‘Freya’ dress.

Vicky collaborated with Peony N’ Pearl to replace the real flowers that were originally attached to the bodice with beautiful silk flowers. Vicky hand glued the white and pink crystals to the strapless bodice and hand dyed the skirt in ombre red.

Ceremony

We were both born and raised in Canberra so wanted to stay in the region while making the most of the beautiful wide open spaces we have around us here, and Gundaroo is such a gorgeous town.

The Gundaroo Soldiers Memorial Hall, where we had our ceremony, is a lovely space – rustic and quaint and ideal for a country wedding.

Reception

We both love to eat and have a drink, so we wanted a focus on local food and wine at our reception. Grazing was actually the first place we visited and we were immediately sold. It’s a gorgeous venue, they have locally sourced food and wine and to top it off they were so easy going and flexible with everything!

My husband and I wanted our day to be a reflection of who we are, and didn’t want to be constrained by the typical dos and don’ts.

Our dress code was ‘wear something you’ve always wanted to but never had the courage.’ My nephews kicked off the ceremony by coming up the aisle dressed as superheroes; we sealed the deal with a champagne toast; we provided a bus from Canberra to Gundaroo and back again which was a great way for people to get to know each other; our table seating chart was based on the periodic table; we had some gorgeous terrariums made for our centrepieces, then held a dance-off to determine who would take one home at the end of the night. The whole idea was for people to cut loose and enjoy themselves!

In lieu of a registry, we provided two donation boxes at our reception – one for BeyondBlue and one for our honeymoon travel fund. This was a great way to give people a choice and put some of the goodwill from our guests to a really important cause.

My one tip for other brides is to consider a winter wedding. Canberra is so beautiful at that time of year and many venues are more than equipped with heating etc. You can save up to 50 percent on the reception by having your wedding ‘off-season.’
