Real Wedding: Ashleigh and Liam

HerCanberra Team

After a hilarious first meeting in Cooma and a meaningful, low key proposal some years later, Ashleigh and Liam’s tied the knot at the NGA.

GETTING READY

We booked apartments at Hotel Realm. One for the boys and one for the girls. We live in Cooma and all of our bridal party were either from Sydney or Cooma so we all needed accommodation the night prior.

The rooms were a great size with a nice balcony and view. It worked quite well having both of us in the same building just on different floors.

We had a low key BYO dinner in the park outside with our family and friends who were around. Then returned to one of the apartments to spend some time with our bridal party before going our separate ways.

THE DRESS

I’ve never been a girly girl who loves dresses, I did some research and went shopping with an idea of what I wanted. Something that was tight fitting to my legs and then fanned out with no straps.

I was all about the style and how it fitted, I knew I wanted a little bit of detail on it. I wasn’t fussed about the designer.

CEREMONY AND RECEPTION VENUE

National Gallery of Australia. The ceremony was meant to be in the sculpture garden but it was raining. So we moved it to the stairs on the side of the NGA, followed by the reception in the Gandel Hall.

We love the NGA. We had been a few times prior, either wandering the sculpture gardens or having a picnic lunch. It was actually the first and only place we looked at as a venue for our wedding. The gardens are always fantastic! I don’t think I could get sick of them.

Every time we walked into the Gandel Hall I was just in awe. It is such a big beautiful space with high ceilings, amazing gold doors and fantastic lighting. The NGA as a venue speaks for itself. Which was perfect for us.

There were about 120 guest that attended our reception. We tried to keep it as small as possible. Ashleigh being Lebanese and Liam being half Italian meant that 85% of our guest were family, which is typical! But we had all the important people in our lives there and that’s what mattered to us.

HIGHLIGHTS

When people kept saying “It’s the best day of your life” in the lead up, we both got pretty tired of it. Neither of us saw the film Inception because of the same reason. We were sick of people telling us how good it was. The thing is… Inception is a great movie. But our wedding day… It really is the best day of your life.

The ceremony was beautiful and intimate, the food and wine was spectacular. Everyone that we loved in the world was with us and every worry in the world seemed to just disappear. It was perfect.

The location, food and drums were the biggest hits. Everyone really had a good time and couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks.

TIPS FOR FUTURE COUPLES

If the first month of planning counts then the answer is No! We blew the budget with the first thing we decided… the venue. At the end of the day we came within a couple of thousand dollars, which I was stoked with.

Having a budget is great but I think what’s more realistic is picking the type of wedding you want to have and working back from there. We could of easily picked a different venue and been within our original budget but it’s not what we wanted. Everyone always says add and extra $10,000 which is true if you set a budget and have no idea what you want. We always jokingly said “well we are only going to do it once… ” At the end of the day we weren’t counting every cent we were spending but we just tried to be conscious of how much everything was, especially big ticket items.

FAVOURITE PART OF THE DAY

Liam loved the ceremony. It was almost the most important part of the day for him. I think we can both agree that our arch way falling over just before we walked out was gold! I think that signified for the celebrations to begin.
