Real Wedding: Rebecca and Jason

HerCanberra Team

After a proposal on Aspen Island, Rebecca and Jason decided that they wanted their wedding to take place at another lakeside location – and that it would be a surprise for their guests.

GETTING READY

I got ready at our recently bought home in Coombs with my three bridesmaids. Jason and the groomsmen got ready at the Hyatt.

THE DRESS

I went to Enchante in Fyshwick by myself to try on different styles of dresses. Jason had suggested I wear a big ball gown dress which I laughed at him as I had been thinking of a lace tight-fitting dress. When I started trying on different styles, I did try on a ball gown and straight away I knew that this was the one.

The dress is a Pronovias Valentina Ball Gown, and I didn’t have enough time to order a dress in my size and luckily the ladies working there said they will let me buy this dress off the rack. I tried the dress on for my sister a week later, to make sure I still loved it and to get her opinion before I completed the purchase and she instantly started to cry. It was the perfect dress.

FIRST LOOK

Jason and I had planned a first look before our ceremony. We met each other at the Stromlo Observatory and it was absolutely amazing. Our photographers captured every delicate moment between Jason and me.

The first look…is a new trend for weddings but it becoming very popular. It allowed us to see each other without everyone else there. The moment was just ours. My friends now want to do a first look as they saw the photos and loved it! We both have said this was the best part of the day- apart from saying ‘I do’.

We got our wedding party photos in the pine forest where I also had a first look with my father. It was the best day in my life and every interaction was captured by our amazing photographers, Corinna and Dylan.

WHY A SURPRISE WEDDING?

canberra-wedding-yacht-club_086(1857)

We originally chose the venue for our engagement party 12 months before the event. After we booked the venue, we started looking for our wedding venue in Canberra but didn’t find anywhere that we loved just as much as the Yacht Club, so nine months before our engagement party we decided to make it a surprise wedding.

A few people were absolutely shocked by the surprise. We kept it a very tight secret except for the bridal party and parents. It was extremely hard keeping it from my close friends and colleagues, and I came close many times to blurting it out as the planning became overwhelming.

RECEPTION

We had a cocktail style party with waiters walking food around the entire night with platters on tables.

Our decorators were A Touch of Elegance and they used gold, black and white throughout the venue and added special touches like a chandelier from the ceiling and beautiful candelabras on the two sitting tables. The cocktail tables had flowers and floating candles sitting on black table cloths. We chose our decorating to be fun and bold – just like Jason and my personalities.

The colour palette was seen throughout the day with the bridesmaids’ dress and bouquets, to the boys’ ties and pocket squares. Our flower girl spread gold and white rose petals on the isle. The atmosphere was filled with love and happiness. Everyone was happy celebrating and you could see and feel the joy within the venue.

ADVICE FOR FUTURE COUPLES

We decided to hire a decorator as I started looking into decorating the venue myself but it would have cost the same amount if I purchased the decorations myself. Plus, my family and I would have had to spend the morning setting up and then [packing] down at the end of the night.

I think you can save a lot of money on the little things like the invitations (Vista Print) and the wedding favors (we used 200 Ferrero Rochers that we bought on special after Christmas totaling $50), as it tied in nicely with our colour scheme.

We also bought 250 business cards for $10 saying ‘Thank you’ on them from Vista Print, which we stuck onto toothpicks, then into the Ferrero Rochers – super easy and cheap.

Anything you’d do differently?

If we had the money, I would get a videographer. [However], we have moments captured by our friends and families phones.
