Real weddings: Julia and Michael

HerCanberra Team

Julia and Michael’s wedding at the Australian National University’s University House was a nod to old fashioned glamour with a romantic touch. We asked the lovely bride to take us through the day.

Getting ready

I got ready at home with my bridesmaids – they prepared a great array of snacks and we had the music pumping. We kept the mood light and fun, a perfect way to be sent off to the church!

The dress

I didn’t have specific inspiration for my gown, I just wanted to choose a gown that made me feel like myself. I loved my fit and flare, strapless luxurious satin gown designed by Cristiano Lucci, purchased from Enchanté Bridal and Formal Wear.

It featured an intricate beaded belt and a dramatic beaded skirt and train. I loved how it made me feel and how it fitted on the day – it matched the glamorous theme I was hoping for!

The ceremony

Michael and I were wed on our 10 year anniversary, and nothing felt more natural to us – I was practically running down the aisle.

We chose the cathedral because it was a location where I had significant moments growing up, and it was a beautiful cathedral.

The reception

My husband lost his beautiful mother six months before our wedding date, which was devastating to us and our families. We ensured she was still a part of our day, by incorporating a donation scheme for the Leukamia Foundation through our photobooth on the day.

Michael and I both attended ANU and loved the venue for the reception- with gorgeous lawns for pre-reception drinks/snacks, and a breathtaking hall for partying on in the evening!

The styling

I wanted an old fashioned gold glamour theme with romantic touches, so we used lots of gold and accents of creams, soft pinks and maroons. I once saw a wedding photoshoot set in a forest, with strong bold berry colours but accented with metallics.

I was inspired by the bold colours and how beautiful they were alongside the metallics and so we developed the mix of creams, pinks and maroons to contrast leafy greens in the flowers, with a strong gold base.

I fell in love the champagne gold sequin fabrics and sought out the elegant bridesmaids gowns to bring the dream to life! I was also able to source matching gold sequin fabric overseas, and created all the table coverings to match.
