How to style the perfect outdoor spring wedding

From weather to floral arches to what your guests will be sitting on – spring can be a tricky time to plan a wedding.

Have you ever looked at a wedding on Pinterest that looks so beautiful yet effortless and think – ‘yeah I could do that? How hard could it be?’ Then you begin, and not only does it turn out there was more skill to it than you thought, but chances are you have spent twice as much for something half as good than if you had used a professional?

While an outdoor spring wedding might sound simple to plan (how hard can it be to make 100 hessian wrapped candles in jars?) according to Laura Bullock from Sweet Little Sunday, a Canberra-based event management and styling company, there’s a bit more to it.

“An outdoor spring wedding should be simple, colourful and creative. However, the weather can be a challenge in itself when any event is held outdoors, let alone a wedding,” explains Laura.

Laura and her business partner Aislinn Brown recommend considering a suitable indoor/undercover alternative when establishing your location in case of wet weather for a spring wedding.

“From a styling perspective, this means that the choices we make in regards to what elements we will be using need to suit both an indoor and outdoor set up should things need to change last minute,” Aislinn explains.

When choosing a venue in or close to a public area they also recommend considering noise from surrounding roads or parks, as this could affect the overall wedding experience.

On the flipside – what happens if it’s a hot and sunny day? According to Laura, it’s a good idea to think of having a shaded area available and if your location doesn’t have any shade options, you could consider a small side-less marquee with water available.

But don’t let potential weather issues dampen your creativity.

“Your wedding is the BEST opportunity to showcase your personalities – don’t be afraid to introduce ideas that haven’t been done before,” encourages Aislinn. “This adds to the fun and will, in turn, enhance the experience you are creating for your guests and yourselves. A floral arch or beautifully styled arbour is a must at an outdoor spring wedding. It is such a major feature and really sets the theme.”

While arches and arbours are very popular at the moment, the Sweet Little Sunday team like to find ways to make each one unique and special.

“Decorative items such as shepherds hooks with hanging jars is a great way to define the aisle as well as adding that extra element of colour.

But Laura and Aislinn also believe that behind every Instagrammable wedding there has to be solid foundation. Like great chairs.

“We really believe that the choice of chair really matters,” says Laura. “There is always a lull between the ceremony and reception where it is vital that your guests have somewhere to go or something to do while the bridal party are getting photos”.

This is where the fun begins as there is no end to the creative things you can organise.

“Having pre-drinks set up outside or near the reception location is a really great option to ensure the day doesn’t become disjointed.”

For the Sweet Little Sunday team, however, drinks are not just drinks.

“This can be incorporated into any theme – boho, rustic, modern etc. Combine this with some live music and before you know if you’ve created an event within an event!”
