Venue spotlight: Something a little different

Emily Allen

Keen for a wedding where you can see, touch and feel the history of the venue?

We’ve found 10 venues where you can see the passage of time and style your wedding around an established space accordingly.

Rosebud and Bell’s Heritage Cottages

Rosebud and Bell’s Cottages are two quaint 1860s pioneer wooden slab cottages – authentic on the outside whilst having brand new inclusions on the inside. From the outside, the property appears to be like any other on the quiet residential street in Cook, but pulling into the gravel driveway you soon see it is far from this.

The cottages are surrounded by beautiful, manicured gardens and the property also backs onto neighbouring paddocks with horses, easily mistaken for being in a quiet, rural location.

Rosebud and Bell’s is best suited for smaller, self-catered ceremonies of around 50 guests and for $1,500 you will have private use of the cottages, gardens and two nights accommodation.

There are number of settings available for wedding ceremonies in the grounds, featuring backdrops of the mountain ranges and open paddocks surrounding the property, as well as the historic Homestead or beautiful gardens.

Lanyon Homestead can accommodate intimate weddings up to 150 guests, and the Lanyon Café can provide varied styles of catering including canapé or formal meals, for a more relaxed event, buffet, or even a picnic style celebration. They have even had some beautiful morning ceremonies followed by a high tea, and are very happy to work in with the style of event the bride and groom imagine.

Gold Creek Station is a family owned and operated pastoral and entertainment property boasting rustic country charm.

Set in the quiet countryside of Hall, the owners pride themselves on getting to know their couples, and making sure guests don’t go hungry with their wholesome country meals.

Couples are able to host their ceremony and reception on the property, and packages include set-up the day prior ensuring you have as much time on your wedding day as possible.

Since the fire that tore through the function centre in 2015, the owners searched the country for the right second-hand building materials for the newly and custom built space, with the jewel being an 1800’s hand-painted lead light front door.

The function centre caters for up to 150 guests with sit down packages starting from $125 + booking fee, and the option for ceremony services also. Casual, non-sit down packages start at $95 per head.

  • Michele Bolitho Hi
Many thanks for all this helpful information. I’m a celebrant and I’ll put a link on my blog ‘Michele the Celebrant’ at I also recommend Crisp Gardens and Galleries on the Hume Highway in Bowning as a memorable and unique venue for a country wedding, large or small.

I have a beautiful peaceful romantic garden in Weston, where hundreds of couples have entered by the garden gate as singles, and left as newlyweds. (Pure magic!)

My garden was in the Australian Open Garden scheme many years ago as The Heart Garden. (There’s a large garden bed in the shape of a heart.) I’ve kept the name, and when couples marry in my garden, they have ‘The Heart Garden Weston ACT’ on their marriage certificates 🙂

I hold ‘beautifully simple, simply beautiful’ small weddings in the garden on weekdays. I invite couples to bring up to about 10 guests, and children are welcome. If the bride and groom bring bubbly, I put out the crystal glasses.

The garden looks glorious in autumn, with many deciduous trees and vines. It’s lovely at any time of year (and there’s a room with windows to the garden on three walls, for days that the weather’s not so human-friendly).

Simple weddings (of any size, at any place, on any day, at any time) are now my specialty as we have no Registry Office weddings in the ACT.
