2XX Radiothon Festive Fair

Each and every year, 2XX, Canberra’s (and arguably Australia’s) oldest community radio station, carves off time in their calendar for Radiothon. And in 2015, that is no different as 2XX Radiothon is well underway. With an aim to raise funds for a new transmitter, 2XX is looking at “Broadening the Broadcast” with a week-long party that the entire Canberra community is invited to attend. From trivia nights to film screenings, small gigs to outside concerts Radiothon concludes this weekend with their Festive Fair on Sunday 8 November.

We spoke to Davey J, a member of the 2XX Radiothon Organising Committee (2XX ROC….see what they did there??), to fill us in on what’s it all about and the big events still to come.

“Radiothon is a long standing tradition in community radio and a key component for 2XX to raise much needed funds for equipment. This year we have set a target of $25k to get ourselves a new FM transmitter. We have been managing with our back-up system for a while, and getting a leg-up from the ABC of late to get our signal heard, but the time has come for the station to get back on its own two feet with its own gear. So that’s why we are “Broadening the Broadcast” with our Radiothon efforts in 2015.”

“We have been flat-out, both on and off air, with special gigs at the Phoenix, trivia nights, a launch party and indigenous film screenings already held, but we are looking forward to our two big community events for everyone to enjoy to finish the week– the “Broadening the Broadcast” Concert in Garema Place on Friday 6 November, and the Festive Fair at Gorman Arts Centre on Sunday 8 November.”

“Both events are our way of throwing open our arms to the Canberra community for a big group hug and show them that 2XX is still around, still relevant and still a major player in the ACT when it comes to promoting local talent and supporting the many community groups who are out there.”

“The Concert in Garema will see Brother Be, Slow Turismo, The Feldons, Beth Monzo and Coolio Desgrascias take the Garema Place stage from 7pm-11pm. While the Festive Fair will feature up to 30 community groups and vendors coming together in the pristine courtyard of Gorman Arts Centre for a full program of music (including Night Potion, up and comers Lauren Lovell and Aidan Cheeseman, Tapestries of Sound, Canberra Opera and for the first time EVER, Mixtape Chorus), games (Thumb Wrestling Championships, Paper Plane Contest), bargains, food, come and try sporting activities, prizes and more –even the “world’s only, Imaginary Petting Zoo” will be there for you to pat “any imaginary animal you’ve ever imagined patting”.

“We are so grateful for the support we have received from Ainslie + Gorman Arts Centre to get the Festive Fair up and running, and stoked to have so many enthusiastic groups and vendors coming to be part of the 2XX family for the day. It’s going to be a lot of fun”

“The best part is that both events are FREE and you are all invited.”

Subscriptions and Donations can be made by calling 6230 0100 or at or at either event this weekend.
