Alzheimer’s Australia Memory Walk and Jog

Run (or walk) for a great cause!

As spring heats up the Canberra Region you will see more and more people take to the bike paths and bridges to start exercising and enjoying the sunshine, but if you need a little extra motivation to get active you can lace up your jogging shoes and run for a great cause!

Alzheimer’s Australia Memory Walk and Jog is a fun and active way to raise money and awareness for Dementia – the second leading cause of death in Australia. Dementia is a broad term used to describe a series of disorders that result in a progressive decline in a person’s functioning, including the loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical abilities. There are many different kinds of dementia and with more than 342,800 Australians living with Dementia, and approximately 25,100 people in Australia living with Younger Onset Dementia (which can happen to people under the age of 65), participating in this 1km or 5km walk and 8km run is a great way to get involved and help support the people in the Canberra community.

The Memory Walk and Jog will be held at Lennox Gardens at Lake Burley Griffin in Yarralumla with the 8km run starting at 9am, the 5km walk start at 9.45am and the 1km walk starting at 10am on Sunday 20th September 2015. At $20 an adult to enter, or $5 for members of the community between 5 and 18 years old, your fundraising and donations goes towards providing much needed support for those living with dementia, and helps to provide improved facilities and services, community awareness programs, counselling services and carer support groups.

If making the event on Sunday 20th September might be a bit hard for you, there are heaps of ways you can get involved. Not only are there similar Memory Walks and Jogs taking place all around Australia but you can also fundraise for your own personal challenge or even provide much needed support as a volunteer on the day.

With 1,800 new cases of Dementia occurring each week in Australia (which is one person every six minutes!) what better motivation do you need to enjoy the beautiful active areas Canberra has to offer, and go running in the sunshine for a good cause?
