Cold Light

Adapted by Alana Valentine, based on the novel Cold Light by Frank Moorhouse

How far can a woman of vision go?

Here comes Edith Campbell Berry, fresh from International acclaim at the League of Nations, handsome British diplomatic husband in tow. Look out 1950’s Canberra, she’s on her way to the top. Or is she?

The League was, after all, a failure, husband Ambrose is a secret crossdresser and her long lost brother Fred is a Communist agitator. Maybe those dreams of renewed diplomatic honour might take longer than she thinks to materialise. In the meantime there is a new national capital to be planned and the vision of a çity like no other to be realised. So when she meets a man who can offer security, a ready-made family and the supposed ‘respectability’ she needs, what will she do?

Sexually flamboyant, culturally dynamic, politically and diplomatically engaged, Edith Campbell Berry comes to life at The Street Theatre in a racy, searing, highly entertaining adaptation by celebrated playwright Alana Valentine.

AFI award-winning actress Sonia Todd stars as Edith, the astonishing creation of one of Australia’s greatest novelists, who, despite everything, chooses to live life with passion and determination.

Directed by Caroline Stacey with a stellar cast featuring Craig Alexander, Nick Byrne, Gerard Carroll, Tobias Cole and Kiki Skountzos and creative team comprising designers Maria T Reginato, Imogen Keen, Linda Buck, Kimmo Vennonen, Zsuzsi Soboslay.
